Chapter 7 - The Public Humiliation

Mark stepped fully onto the dark surface of the trampoline mat, closing the distance between himself and the terrified teenager.
He stood tall and imposing in his light green shirt and gray shorts, projecting an aura of toxic, unearned authority.
"You think because your mother is around, you do not have to listen to me anymore?" Mark hissed under his breath.
"I am still the man of this house when she is not looking."
Leo took a nervous step backward, his sneakers slipping slightly on the smooth, bouncy surface of the mat.
"I am not trying to cause any trouble," Leo whispered, his hands raised defensively.
"You are nothing but trouble," Mark barked, his voice rising in volume so the entire yard could hear his cruel words.
"You are weak, you are lazy, and you are a complete embarrassment to this family!"
Suddenly, Mark lunged forward and intentionally shoved his shoulder hard into Leo's chest.
The forceful impact threw the boy completely off balance.
Leo tumbled backward, his knees buckling under him as he crashed hard onto the dark mat.
He landed awkwardly on his knees, his hands planting onto the surface to stop his face from hitting the ground.
He stayed there, kneeling in the center of the mat, completely paralyzed by fear and overwhelming public humiliation.
The entire backyard fell into a dead, horrifying silence.
The music from the small radio seemed to echo loudly in the sudden void of human conversation.
Mark stood over the kneeling boy, puffing his chest out in a disgusting display of dominance and cruel triumph.
"Stay down there where you belong," Mark spat, pointing a demanding finger at the boy's face.
"Maybe down there on your knees, you will finally learn some actual respect."
Tears streamed freely down Leo's face as he looked around at his shocked grandparents and wide-eyed cousins.
He felt utterly worthless, fully believing that no one in the world would ever stand up to protect him.
But then, a shadow fell over the dark mat.
It looked exactly like the tense standoff captured in the family photo, image_560320.jpg, where the mother stood fiercely behind her kneeling son while the uncle glared down at them.
Sarah stepped silently and powerfully onto the mat, positioning her body directly behind her broken, kneeling child.
She did not shout, and she did not frantically wave her arms.

She simply stood there, an immovable pillar of absolute maternal fury, her piercing eyes locking directly onto her brother's soul.
The lioness had finally awakened, and she was ready to destroy the threat to her cub.
