Chapter 9 - THE DRIVER WHO NEVER EXISTED

The highway crash had haunted me for twelve years.

I remembered the wet pavement.

The headlights appearing too suddenly.

The impact.

The broken glass.

The gasoline.

And Julian's blood soaking my hands.

But there was one thing I'd forgotten.

The second vehicle.

For years, I'd pictured it as a truck.

Large.

Dark.

Moving too fast.

Now the recovered surveillance records suggested the vehicle belonged to a private security company.

A company controlled by Daniel Lawrence.

I stared at the photograph.

"That's it."

Julian leaned closer.

"You're sure?"

I nodded.

"The stripe along the side."

My hands trembled.

"I remember."

Investigators reopened the crash review.

The old report claimed the second driver fled and was never identified.

But archived insurance records connected the vehicle to a company called Meridian Security.

Meridian's owner had been Daniel Lawrence.

The connection was troubling.

Then investigators discovered something worse.

The vehicle had been repaired two days after the collision.

The repair invoice listed damage to the front bumper and passenger-side headlight.

The same areas implicated in the crash reconstruction.

Julian sat motionless.

"Someone tried to kill us."

I looked toward him.

"Maybe."

He turned.

I continued.

"We need to let the investigators establish what happened."

For a moment, he looked surprised.

Then nodded.

"You're right."

That evening, I returned home exhausted.

Lily was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

She looked up.

"How was your day?"

I laughed weakly.

"Complicated."

She smiled.

"That seems to be happening a lot."

I sat beside her.

For several minutes, we worked through her math problems.

Normal things.

Fractions.

Homework.

Dinner.

The kind of ordinary life I had spent twelve years trying to protect.

Then Lily looked at me.

"Elena?"

"Yes?"

"Are we rich?"

I nearly dropped my pencil.

"What?"

She grinned.

"The kids at school saw Julian Cross on the news."

I sighed.

"Lily, nothing has been decided."

She nodded.

"Okay."

Then she became serious.

"Would it change us?"

I studied her.

"What do you mean?"

"If we had money."

I took her hand.

"No."

She looked relieved.

"Good."

Then she smiled.

"Because I like our apartment."

I laughed.

"Even with the leaking faucet?"

"Especially the leaking faucet."

For a moment, everything felt peaceful.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

Her voice was tense.

"Elena, we located Dr. Whitaker."

My stomach tightened.

"Where?"

"A private clinic in Connecticut."

I stood.

"Will he talk?"

"He's already spoken with investigators."

I closed my eyes.

"And?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"Elena, he says Charles Cross wasn't the person who arranged your disappearance."

My heart stopped.

"Then who?"

Rebecca took a breath.

"Your mother."

May you like

The room went silent.

Isabel Navarro had apparently helped create the plan that erased her own daughter's identity.
