Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO DIED TWICE

Charles Cross had been declared dead on March fourteenth.
The highway crash happened March sixteenth.
Two days.
Two impossible days.
Julian stared at me as though the world had shifted beneath his feet.
"My father died in a hospital."
I shook my head.
"I saw him outside your school."
"No."
"He gave me the key."
Julian stood.
"Elena, I watched them close his coffin."
My chest tightened.
"So did I watch them bury mine."
That stopped him.
For the first time, he seemed to understand how thoroughly our lives had been manipulated.
We weren't dealing with one false report.
We were dealing with two.
Julian contacted his longtime attorney, Rebecca Shaw.
She arrived within an hour.
After hearing the story, she asked for every document connected to Charles Cross's death.
The preliminary review uncovered inconsistencies.
The death certificate had been amended.
The original hospital records were incomplete.
And the attending physician had been disciplined years later for falsifying medical documentation in an unrelated case.
Julian sat motionless.
"Was any of it real?"
Rebecca answered carefully.
"We need independent verification."
I appreciated that.
For twelve years, people had used certainty to control me.
Now someone was finally willing to admit what they didn't know.
That evening, I went home.
Lily was waiting on the couch beneath our old yellow blanket.
The moment she saw me, she stood.
"Elena!"
I held her tightly.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then she whispered, "Are they taking me away?"
My heart broke.
"No one has ordered that."
"But Dad's lawyer says he has money."
"Money doesn't automatically decide custody."
She pulled back.
Her eyes were red.
"I don't want to live with him."
I brushed her hair away from her face.
"I know."
Then Lily looked toward the brass key.
"Mom told me about that."
I froze.
"What?"
"She said it opened something you were afraid to remember."
My hands went cold.
"What else did she say?"
Lily hesitated.
"That it wasn't yours."
I stared.
"Then whose?"
Lily reached beneath the couch.
She removed a small envelope.
Our mother's handwriting covered the front.
For Elena, when Julian Cross finally finds her.
I stopped breathing.
Lily watched my face.
"Mom said you'd know when to open it."
My fingers trembled as I broke the seal.
Inside was a letter.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed my mother standing beside Charles Cross.
They were holding a newborn baby.
On the back were two words.
OUR DAUGHTER.
I stared at Lily.
Then at the photograph.
May you like
Because the baby in Charles Cross's arms wasn't me.
It was Lily.
