Chapter 11 - THE LETTER THAT CHANGED HIS LIFE

Charles Cross had written the letter before his disappearance.

The paper was yellowed.

The ink had faded slightly.

But every word felt painfully deliberate.

Elena,

There may come a day when Julian believes I abandoned him.

If that happens, I need you to understand something.

I didn't leave because I didn't love my son.

Julian sat beside me.

His hands were trembling.

I continued reading.

Daniel Lawrence was trying to obtain control of our emergency communications patents.

He threatened Isabel's daughters.

He threatened Julian.

And he told me that if I refused, someone would die.

I swallowed.

The letter continued.

I believed I could protect everyone by disappearing long enough to gather evidence.

I was wrong.

Julian closed his eyes.

For years, he'd believed his father left him nothing but a business empire and unanswered questions.

Now he was learning Charles had been afraid.

Desperate.

And trying to protect children caught inside a financial dispute.

I read the next paragraph.

Elena Navarro is the only person I trust to carry the evidence because she is the only person Daniel doesn't yet understand.

My chest tightened.

She is young, but she has something the men around me have forgotten.

Courage without cruelty.

Tears filled my eyes.

Julian looked toward me.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then I continued.

If she survives, protect her.

If Julian survives, tell him the truth.

And if I do not return, make certain Isabel's daughters receive what rightfully belongs to their family.

The final sentence was almost impossible to read.

Please forgive me for asking children to carry the consequences of adult greed.

I lowered the letter.

For a long moment, the room was silent.

Then Julian whispered, "He wasn't choosing you instead of me."

I looked at him.

"He was trying to protect both of us."

Julian nodded.

Tears slid down his face.

For the first time, he allowed himself to cry for the father he'd spent twelve years resenting.

I sat beside him.

Didn't try to fix it.

Didn't tell him everything happened for a reason.

I simply stayed.

Just as I had on the night of the crash.

Later that week, investigators uncovered records showing Charles had been transferred to a private medical facility after his disappearance.

The trail ended years earlier.

But one document suggested he might have lived far longer than anyone believed.

Julian immediately requested further investigation.

Then Rebecca called.

Her voice sounded stunned.

"Julian, we found a current record."

He stood.

"What?"

"A man matching Charles Cross's identity was admitted to a rehabilitation residence last month."

I stopped breathing.

Julian gripped the phone.

"Where?"

"Upstate New York."

A long silence followed.

May you like

Then Rebecca whispered:

"Julian, your father may still be alive."
