Chapter 9 - The Weight of Justice

Six months later, the high-profile trial of State of Maryland v. Julian Vance, Helena Marsh, and Cynthia Marsh reached its swift, devastating conclusion at the Baltimore City Circuit Court.
Faced with an unassailable mountain of evidence—forensic toxicology reports, intercepted bank transfers, video confessions, and the full testimony of black-market brokers who turned state's evidence to save themselves—the jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts after less than thirty minutes of deliberation.
Inside the packed courtroom, Dileia sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a simple, elegant gray suit. Sitting beside her was seven-year-old Noah, looking healthy, vibrant, and happy.
At the defense table sat Dr. Vance, Helena, and Cynthia, all wearing blue federal inmate jumpsuits.
Dr. Vance looked completely destroyed: thirty pounds lighter, his hair thin and unstyled, staring blankly at the floor. Helena sat weeping silently, her high-society arrogance stripped away forever. Cynthia slouched in her chair, dark purple circles carved beneath her hollow eyes.
Judge William Mercer slammed his heavy wooden gavel down, restoring absolute silence to the gallery.
"Julian Vance," Judge Mercer declared sternly, his voice echoing off the high marble walls. "You took an oath to preserve human life. Instead, you weaponized medicine for greed and executed a cold-blooded murder. I sentence you to two consecutive life terms in maximum-security prison, without the possibility of parole."
Dr. Vance collapsed forward onto the table, letting out an agonizing, broken sob.
"Helena Marsh," the judge continued, turning his cold gaze onto the stepmother. "For your primary role in the premeditated murder of Evelyn Marsh and RICO conspiracy, you are sentenced to life in prison."
"Cynthia Marsh," Judge Mercer concluded. "For grand larceny, fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder, you are sentenced to twenty-five years in state custody."
The heavy wooden gavel struck the block with a thunderous CRACK.

Court marshals immediately grabbed their chains, marching them out through the side doors toward the holding cells. As Cynthia was led away, she turned her head toward the front row, looking at Dileia with wild, desperate tears, begging silently for a forgiveness that would never come.
Dileia didn't look away. She met Cynthia’s eyes with total, serene silence, watching the heavy steel door close behind her stepfamily forever.
