Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Corridor

The temperature in the hospital hallway seemed to plunge twenty degrees.

Dr. Vance froze, his fingers loosening on Dileia’s wrist. He turned his head slowly toward the end of the corridor.

Walking down the hallway flanked by four armed men in charcoal suits was Vincent Moretti. He was wearing a dark, custom-tailored Italian suit, his silvering hair immaculately combed back, his pale gray eyes fixed on Dr. Vance’s hand with lethal intensity.

Behind him walked the hospital’s CEO, Mr. Sterling, who was sweating profusely and trembling like a leaf.

“Mr... Mr. Moretti!” Dr. Vance stammered, instantly releasing Dileia and stepping back, his arrogant demeanor dissolving into pure terror. “We... we didn't expect you today! The Moretti Foundation’s annual wing inspection wasn't scheduled until next month!”

Vincent ignored the doctor completely. He walked straight up to Dileia, stopping mere inches away. His presence was overwhelming, radiating absolute authority and danger.

He looked down at her red, bruised wrist, then reached out with gloved fingers and gently adjusted the collar of her pale blue scrubs.

“Did he hurt you, Dileia?” Vincent asked softly, his voice devoid of any warmth toward anyone else in the room.

Dileia swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs. “I... I'm okay, Mr. Moretti.”

Cynthia, completely ignorant of who was standing before her, stepped forward with her chin raised. “Who do you think you are, intruding on a private hospital matter?! This nurse is stealing medical supplies! My fiancé, Dr. Vance, was simply discipline—”

CRACK.

Vincent’s chief lieutenant, the scarred man named Frank, struck Cynthia across the face with an open palm so hard she tumbled onto the linoleum floor, her expensive handbag spilling across the tiles.

“Speak again in the presence of Don Moretti without permission,” Frank growled softly, “and you won't have teeth to speak with.”

Dr. Vance gasped in horror, dropping to his knees beside Cynthia, his hands shaking uncontrollably. “Mr. Moretti! Please! She didn't know!”

Vincent finally turned his pale gray eyes onto the trembling doctor.

“Marlo County Public Hospital receives a twelve-million-dollar annual grant from my family’s foundation,” Vincent said, his tone smooth and conversational. “In return, I expect two things: flawless medical care for the people of this city, and absolute respect for the woman who paid for my dinner last night.”

Vincent reached out and calmly took the stolen ampoule from Dileia’s hand. He held it up to the light, studying the counterfeit label.

“You’ve been stealing high-grade oncology and cardiac medications from this hospital for three years, Vance,” Vincent revealed coldly. “Smuggling them out through black-market brokers in New York, replacing them with salt water, and letting innocent patients die in agony so you could buy your mistress diamond necklaces.”

Dr. Vance went white as a sheet. “That... that’s a lie! You have no proof!”

Vincent gave a faint, chilling smile. “I am Vincent Moretti, Doctor. I don't need proof to destroy you. I only need a reason.”
