Chapter 8 - The Secret Inside the Silver Moon

Someone had spent twelve years searching for the truth my mother hid.

And now I was holding it in my palm.

I returned to the silver locket.

The tiny blue stone caught the light.

I examined the silver frame, the photograph, and the paper tucked behind it.

Nothing looked unusual.

Julian watched from across the table.

"May had a necklace just like that," he said.

I looked up.

"The crescent moon?"

He nodded.

"My mother commissioned two pieces from a jeweler in Manhattan."

"Two?"

"One for May. One for a family friend."

I stared.

"My mother?"

"Possibly."

My heart began pounding.

I turned the locket over.

The engraved initials looked ordinary.

Until I noticed a tiny seam beneath the letter M.

I carefully pressed it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a microSD card no bigger than my fingernail.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Julian whispered, "Evelyn."

Detective Brooks arranged for the card to be examined by digital forensic specialists.

I spent the next two hours pacing.

What had my mother done?

Why had she hidden evidence inside a necklace she'd told me never to open?

And why hadn't she trusted me with the truth?

Finally, Brooks returned.

"The card contains encrypted files. Our specialists recovered part of the archive."

She opened a secure laptop.

Photographs appeared.

Financial accounts.

Hospital billing records.

Names.

Payments.

Then a video.

My mother appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Healthy.

Younger than I remembered.

I covered my mouth.

She looked directly into the camera.

"My name is Evelyn Mercer Whitaker."

Tears blurred my vision.

"If you're watching this, then I wasn't able to finish what I started."

Her voice trembled.

"I worked for Leonard Vale. He used hospital accounts to conceal illegal payments and manipulate records for people who wanted to disappear."

Julian leaned forward.

Evelyn continued.

"When May Voss was injured, I learned that someone planned to use her hospital admission as an opportunity to kill her."

Julian stopped breathing.

"I warned Miriam Sharma. Together, we helped move May to another facility."

My heart raced.

My mother had saved his sister.

Then Evelyn looked down at something outside the frame.

"Leonard discovered what we did. He's been searching for May ever since."

A pause.

"If my daughter ever finds this, I need her to know something."

My chest tightened.

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"Cora, I didn't keep these secrets because I didn't trust you."

She swallowed.

"I kept them because I wanted you to have a normal childhood."

I began crying.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart."

The video flickered.

Then my mother delivered a warning.

"Leonard believes the files end with the financial accounts."

She looked directly into the camera.

"But the most important evidence isn't on this card."

Julian frowned.

"What?"

Evelyn continued.

"It's with the woman who took May away."

My heart pounded.

Then she whispered the woman's name.

"Miriam's sister, Eleanor."

The video ended.

I looked toward Detective Brooks.

"Who's Eleanor?"

She searched the archived records.

Then slowly raised her eyes.

"Eleanor Sharma is alive."

My breath caught.

"Where?"

Brooks looked at the screen.

"She owns a greenhouse in upstate New York."

The room went silent.

May you like

Then Julian whispered:

"The garden."
