Chapter 11 - The Traitor at Julian's Table

The next morning, Julian summoned the people he trusted most.
Only four arrived.
Tomas.
His attorney, Rebecca Sloan.
His finance director, Andrew Keller.
And an older adviser named Victor Hale.
I watched from the adjoining room with Detective Brooks.
Julian had agreed to cooperate with the investigation.
That alone was remarkable.
For years, he'd maintained control through fear.
Now he was risking his own freedom to expose the people who had manipulated his family.
He placed a copy of Evelyn's financial records on the table.
"Someone inside this organization continued sending money to Leonard Vale after my father's death."
Victor frowned.
"Those accounts are decades old."
Julian nodded.
"Then explain why the transfers continued last month."
Silence.
Andrew Keller adjusted his glasses.
"I'd need to examine the records."
Rebecca leaned forward.
"Independent auditors already have."
Victor's face tightened.
"Julian, this is family business."
Julian looked directly at him.
"My sister was forced into hiding. My father was murdered. An innocent woman died."
His voice remained controlled.
"This stopped being private family business a long time ago."
I felt a strange pride watching him.
Not because he frightened the room.
Because he was finally refusing to let fear protect wrongdoing.
Then Andrew stood.
"I need to make a call."
Detective Brooks entered immediately.
"Please remain seated, Mr. Keller."
His face went pale.
Julian looked at him.
"Andrew?"
Keller swallowed.
"I didn't know about Evelyn."
"What did you know?"
Andrew's hands trembled.
"Victor told me the transfers were authorized."
Everyone turned toward Victor Hale.
The older man slowly smiled.
"You really think your father built this empire without making difficult decisions?"
Julian stared.
"What have you done?"
Victor leaned back.
"I protected the organization."
"By financing Leonard?"
"By keeping dangerous secrets buried."
Julian's jaw tightened.
"My sister spent eleven years believing I wanted her dead."
Victor shrugged.
"Sometimes protecting the family requires sacrifice."
Something changed in Julian's expression.
I watched the final thread connecting him to his father's brutal world begin to break.
"No," he said quietly.
Victor frowned.
"What?"
"That's what men like you say when you want other people to pay for your crimes."
Detective Brooks signaled to the officers outside.
Victor was detained for questioning.
Andrew agreed to cooperate.
Financial investigators immediately began examining the accounts.
But before Victor was taken away, he looked toward me.
His smile returned.
"Miss Whitaker."
I went cold.
"You really are Evelyn's daughter."
Julian stepped between us.
Victor laughed.
"She had the same expression when she thought she'd beaten us."
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?"
Victor leaned forward.
"Your mother didn't hide everything in the locket."
I stared.
"Then where?"
His smile widened.
"Ask Julian what happened to the nurse who signed May's discharge papers."
I looked toward Julian.
His expression changed.
Victor continued.
"That nurse didn't disappear."
A terrible silence followed.
"She changed her name."

Then he spoke the words that made my heart stop.
"And she's been working beside Cora at the hospital."
