Chapter 13 - The House My Mother Left Me

My mother had left me more than a secret.
She'd left me a future.
The house stood on a quiet road outside a small upstate town.
White siding.
Blue shutters.
A porch overlooking a garden.
It wasn't enormous.
It wasn't luxurious.
But when I stepped through the front door, I felt something I'd been missing for twelve years.
Home.
Julian stood behind me.
He'd insisted on driving, but he'd also promised not to make decisions for me.
I appreciated that more than he knew.
The living room smelled of old wood and lavender.
Dust covered the furniture.
A small piano sat beneath the window.
And on the mantel stood a photograph of my mother holding me as a child.
I picked it up.
Tears blurred my vision.
"She planned all this?"
Julian nodded.
"Apparently."
I walked into the kitchen.
There were yellow curtains.
A small table.
Two mismatched chairs.
And a handwritten recipe card pinned beside the stove.
My mother's handwriting.
Sunday pancakes for Cora.
I began crying.
Julian approached slowly.
"May I?"
I nodded.
He wrapped his arms around me.
For a long time, I let myself cry against his chest.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I finally understood how hard my mother had fought to give me a life she never got to see.
When I stepped back, Julian gently brushed a tear from my cheek.
"She loved you."
"I know."
He hesitated.
"May told me Evelyn saved her when nobody else would."
I smiled through tears.
"That sounds like Mom."
We explored the rest of the house.
Upstairs, I found a small bedroom painted pale green.
Books lined the shelves.
A stuffed rabbit sat on the bed.
And inside the closet was a box labeled:
For Cora, when she's ready.
My hands shook.
Inside were photographs.
Birthday cards.
A collection of letters.
And a savings account statement.
My mother had been putting money aside for years.
Not millions.
Not a fortune.
But enough to help me begin again.
Then I found one final letter.
My darling girl,
If you've found this house, then you've probably faced truths I hoped you would never have to carry.
Please don't let those truths make you afraid of loving people.
I wiped my eyes.
Choose someone who respects your choices.
Someone who doesn't mistake possession for devotion.
Someone who makes you feel safe enough to be yourself.
I slowly looked toward Julian.
He stood near the doorway.
Watching quietly.
Not interrupting.
Not demanding anything.
Just waiting.
My mother's words seemed to fill the room.
Then Julian's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed immediately.
"What?"
I stepped closer.
"Julian?"
He listened.
Then his face hardened.
"When?"
He ended the call.
"Leonard Vale has been located."
My heart pounded.
"Where?"
"Near the Canadian border."
"Did they arrest him?"
Julian nodded.
"But there's a complication."
I swallowed.
"What?"
"He claims Lorenzo Dresco wasn't trying to kill me at the auction."
I stared.
"Then what was he trying to do?"
Julian looked directly into my eyes.
"Leonard says the gunfire was intended to force May out of hiding."
My stomach dropped.
"Using me?"
Julian nodded.
"And he claims someone inside the hospital provided Lorenzo with your location that night."
I stared.
"Priya?"
Julian shook his head.
"No."
Then he revealed the final betrayal.
"It was Felix. He never intended to collect your father's debt."
May you like
His voice darkened.
"He was paid to make sure you crossed my path."
