Chapter 5 - The Boy Who Saved My Father

Antonio Russo had saved my father's life when he was only twelve years old.
I didn't believe it until he showed me the scar on his left shoulder.
We were sitting in a private conference room at one of his hotels.
Grandma Rose was resting safely in a nearby suite while investigators examined the break-in.
Antonio had agreed to answer my questions.
All of them.
"How did you know Dad?" I asked.
He took a slow breath.
"Daniel worked with my father. They were trying to expose money laundering through several shipping companies."
I frowned.
"Your family was involved too?"
"Yes."
Antonio didn't look away.
"My father had connections to organized crime. He made choices that hurt people."
I appreciated the honesty.
He continued.
"But Daniel discovered Vincent Moretti was stealing from investors and employee benefit funds."
"What happened?"
"Vincent found out."
Antonio looked toward the window.
"One night, Daniel came to our house carrying documents. Men followed him."
My stomach tightened.
"Did they hurt him?"
"They tried."
Antonio pulled back the collar of his shirt slightly.
A pale scar crossed his shoulder.
"I was twelve. I heard shouting in the hallway."
He gave a small, humorless smile.
"I did something incredibly stupid."
"What?"
"I opened the back door and told Daniel to run."
I stared.
"And the scar?"
"One of Vincent's men caught me before I could close the door."
My breath caught.
"He hurt you?"
Antonio nodded.
"Daniel came back for me instead of escaping."
Silence settled between us.
Then Antonio said:
"Your father could've saved himself. He chose to protect a child."
Tears filled my eyes.
That sounded exactly like Dad.
The man who stopped for injured animals.
Who worked overtime to help neighbors pay rent.
Who never let anyone leave our house hungry.
I wiped my face.
"Then why did you become part of this world?"
Antonio looked down.
"Because after my father died, I inherited responsibilities I should've walked away from."
His voice was quiet.
"I spent years convincing myself I could control something that was already poisoning everything around me."
I studied him.
"Do you still believe that?"
He looked directly at me.
"No."
For a moment, the room felt strangely peaceful.
Then his phone rang.
Antonio answered.
His expression hardened.
"Where?"
A pause.
"Are you certain?"
He ended the call.
"What happened?" I asked.
His voice became low.
"The police found the men who broke into your apartment."
My heart raced.
"And?"
"They were carrying photographs of you."
I swallowed.
"Why?"
Antonio looked troubled.
"Because someone has placed a reward for information about your location."
My stomach dropped.
"Who?"
He hesitated.
Then showed me a photograph.
An older man stood outside a private hospital in Connecticut.
Silver hair.
Thin face.
Familiar eyes.
My entire body went cold.
Because the man in the photograph wasn't Vincent Moretti.
It was my father.
May you like
Daniel Bennett.
Alive.
