Chapter 11 - The Truth Antonio's Mother Kept Hidden

Maria Russo had spent fifteen years carrying a secret that could destroy her son's understanding of his family.

She sat beside the fireplace, her hands trembling around a cup of tea.

Antonio knelt before her.

"Mama, what happened?"

Maria looked at him.

"Your father didn't die from natural causes."

The room went silent.

Antonio stared.

"What?"

"Gabriel discovered Luca was moving money through Vincent's businesses."

Antonio's jaw tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Luca threatened you."

Maria's voice broke.

"He said if I spoke, you'd be next."

Antonio closed his eyes.

For years, he'd believed his father's death was simply another tragedy that came with age and stress.

Now he was discovering someone had deliberately silenced Gabriel.

"How did he die?" Antonio whispered.

Maria covered her mouth.

"His medication was tampered with."

My stomach turned.

The same pattern.

My mother.

Antonio's father.

People who tried to expose the truth and paid for it.

Maria continued.

"Gabriel suspected something before he died. He asked me to keep a folder safe."

Antonio looked up.

"Where is it?"

Maria hesitated.

"In the house."

"Where?"

She looked toward the old family portrait above the fireplace.

Antonio followed her gaze.

Then slowly stood.

He removed the painting.

Behind it was a small wall safe.

Maria handed him a key.

Inside lay a leather folder.

Photographs.

Financial records.

And a sealed letter.

Antonio opened it.

His father's handwriting filled the page.

My son,

If you're reading this, someone has finally uncovered what I couldn't finish.

Antonio's hands trembled.

The letter explained how Gabriel had discovered Luca's involvement with Vincent.

It described threats against Daniel Bennett.

It also revealed Gabriel's plan to turn over the evidence to federal investigators.

Then came the paragraph that made Antonio stop breathing.

Antonio, I know you've been raised to believe the Russo name must always be feared.

But fear isn't strength.

If you ever have the chance to choose another life, take it.

Antonio covered his face.

For the first time since I'd met him, he cried.

Not silently.

Not secretly.

He cried like a son who had just heard his father's voice after fifteen years.

Maria reached for him.

He hugged her tightly.

"I'm sorry, Mama."

She shook her head.

"No, sweetheart."

I stood beside Dad, tears streaming down my face.

Then Antonio looked toward me.

Something in his expression had changed.

For the first time, he seemed less like the man everyone feared.

And more like someone who was finally tired of being feared.

But the investigators weren't finished.

Inside Gabriel's folder was one final photograph.

It showed Luca Bellini standing beside Vincent Moretti.

Between them was a younger man.

His face was familiar.

Too familiar.

It was Marco Bellini.

My head waiter at Bellarosa.

May you like

The man who'd been watching me every day.

And according to the documents, Marco had been working for Vincent since before I was hired.
