Chapter 10 - The Father Who Walked Back Into My Life

I recognized my father before he stepped fully through the doorway.
The way he stood.
The way he tilted his head.
The nervous habit of adjusting his glasses even though he no longer wore them.
"Dad?"
Daniel Bennett stopped.
For a moment, he simply stared.
Then his face crumpled.
"Sophie."
I ran toward him.
He caught me in his arms.
And the nine years I'd spent believing he was dead collapsed into one heartbreaking embrace.
I cried against his chest.
"You left."
His arms tightened.
"I know."
"You promised you'd come home."
"I tried."
I pulled back.
"Why didn't you?"
His eyes filled.
"Because Vincent threatened you."
I shook my head.
"Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"But nobody ever asked what losing you did to me."
His expression broke.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart."
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then I reached for him again.
I wasn't ready to forgive everything.
But I wasn't going to waste another second pretending I didn't love him.
Antonio stood near the doorway.
He gave us space.
Dad noticed him.
Their eyes met.
Something passed between them.
A memory.
A debt.
An understanding older than I was.
"Antonio," Dad said.
"Daniel."
My father stepped closer.
"You kept your promise."
Antonio shook his head.
"Not completely."
Daniel looked toward me.
"She's alive. She's safe. That's more than I expected."
I stared between them.
"What promise?"
Dad took a slow breath.
"Fifteen years ago, Antonio's father helped me collect evidence against Vincent."
Antonio nodded.
"When Gabriel Russo died, I promised I'd protect whatever remained of Daniel's work."
I frowned.
"Then why didn't you know Dad was alive?"
Antonio looked toward him.
"Because someone deliberately kept that information from me."
Daniel nodded.
"Luca."
The name hung in the room.
Then Dad explained.
Luca had been intercepting communications between investigators, witnesses, and the Russo organization for years.
He'd helped Vincent maintain control through fear.
And he'd used Antonio's reputation to frighten anyone who might expose the truth.
But Dad had something Luca didn't know existed.
A complete set of original financial records.
He'd hidden them under an assumed identity while cooperating with federal investigators.
Now the investigation had finally reached the point where those records could be used.
I looked at Dad.
"Can they prove what happened to Mom?"
His eyes filled.
"Yes."
My throat tightened.
Then he revealed one final secret.
"Your mother wasn't the only woman Vincent targeted."
I stared.
"What do you mean?"
Dad looked toward Maria Russo.
Antonio's mother.
"Maria tried to stop him too."
Antonio went completely still.
"Mama?"
Maria lowered her eyes.
May you like
Then whispered:
"There's something about your father's death I've never told you."
