Chapter 9 - THE ENEMY INSIDE THE FAMILY TREE

Marcus Carter had not been a gangster.

That surprised Adrian.

He was a prosecutor.

Federal.

Organized-crime division.

Decades earlier, before Adrian was born, Marcus Carter investigated the Moretti network.

Then he met Celeste Romano.

Affair.

Pregnancy.

Sophia.

If the Moretti family discovered the prosecutor had fathered Celeste’s child, two families would burn.

Romano.

Moretti.

Federal investigation.

Everything.

So Sophia disappeared into the Carter family under another surname.

Protected by Marcus’s sister.

The relationship ended.

Marcus kept investigating Moretti operations.

Then vanished from federal service after a corruption allegation.

Was he corrupt?

Maybe not.

Celeste’s journal suggested Moretti allies framed him.

No proof complete enough to declare certainty.

He died years later in obscurity.

Sophia grew up believing her mother abandoned her.

Different generation.

Same lie.

Ethan stared at the photograph of his grandfather.

“My mother never knew?”

“She knew Celeste was her mother,” Dominic said. “Not Marcus.”

“Why do you know?”

“Father’s records.”

Antonio had researched everything after Celeste’s death.

Why keep Sophia hidden then?

Fear.

If Sophia’s true father became public, old investigations could reopen.

Moretti rivals could claim family betrayal.

Romano investors might challenge control.

Antonio chose stability.

Again.

Always stability.

At the price of truth.

Then Dominic revealed something Adrian did not expect.

Antonio had eventually contacted Sophia.

Privately.

He offered money.

She refused.

He offered formal recognition.

She refused.

She told him:

“I will not let another powerful man decide when I become family.”

Adrian almost smiled.

He liked her without meeting her.

Then Sophia died before Antonio could fix the trust.

Ethan inherited the unopened questions.

Now he had answers.

Not happy ones.

But his.

Then came Dominic’s final confession.

He knew about Marcus Carter.

And used it.

When Evers identified a possible Romano descendant inside Moretti Logistics, Dominic feared federal attention.

He believed Ethan might be a planted investigator or claimant.

That was why he threatened Ethan after the shipping report.

Not just money.

Paranoia.

Again.

“Did you order the truck sabotage?”

“No.”

“Do you know who did?”

Dominic looked away.

“Maybe.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“Who?”

“Caleb Moretti.”

Their cousin.

Head of fleet security at the time.

Adrian remembered Caleb leaving the organization abruptly after the accident.

Dominic said he told Caleb to “scare Carter off.”

Not damage the truck.

Caleb apparently arranged someone to tamper with a tire.

Not brakes.

Then the vehicle crashed after separate brake failure.

Could both be true?

Investigators reopened records.

The tire tampering had evidence.

Brake line? Still uncertain.

Caleb had died three years earlier in another accident.

No convenient villain confession.

Life remained incomplete.

Dominic’s instruction still mattered.

He had initiated intimidation.

Even if he did not intend a near-fatal crash.

Another consequence.

Then Adrian asked:

“Why tell me now?”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Because I am tired of being the only villain in a story built by dead men.”

That sentence landed.

He was guilty.

Also inherited a structure built on secrets.

Both.

Then Dominic said:

“I’m going to plead to what I did if prosecutors offer a fair agreement.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if I keep fighting every fact, I become Father.”

That surprised Adrian.

Then:

“And because Lily asked if I’m bad.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Three years of poisoning me didn’t move you?”

Dominic’s face broke.

“No.”

Honest.

“It was easier when you were the enemy.”

Silence.

“When she asked…”

He looked away.

“I heard myself through a child.”

That was not redemption.

But maybe the first crack.

Months passed.

Adrian continued recovering.

Ethan’s Romano claim settled.

Not full control.

A substantial economic trust.

Independent governance seat offered.

Ethan accepted only if worker and compliance representatives gained equal oversight.

Passed.

Hannah left estate employment.

Good.

She wanted a life that wasn’t tied to Moretti secrets.

Adrian helped only where she explicitly asked.

Lily still visited.

Often.

She declared his new tea “good.”

It was prepared by staff under documented medication rules.

No personal drops.

No family doctor.

No exceptions.

Then Adrian visited Dominic before a court hearing.

Not prison yet.

A secured legal setting.

Dominic looked at him.

“Do you hate me?”

Adrian thought.

“Sometimes.”

Dominic nodded.

“Fair.”

“Do you love me?”

Adrian hated that question more.

“Yes.”

Dominic’s eyes filled.

“Also fair.”

Then Adrian said:

“Love will not change what I testify to.”

“I know.”

Good.

When Adrian returned home, Lily was asleep on the library sofa.

Gray rabbit under her chin.

Hannah had gone to make tea.

Adrian smiled.

Then noticed something.

The rabbit’s seam was open again.

Inside:

A small folded paper.

Not Ethan’s.

Different handwriting.

Mrs. Ricci recognized it instantly.

Celeste’s.

Adrian unfolded it.

One sentence:

May you like

If Adrian survives what Dominic becomes, tell him Dominic is not Antonio’s son.

Adrian stopped breathing.
