Chapter 6 - ETHAN CARTER’S REAL FAMILY

Ethan Carter was Adrian’s nephew.
Possibly.
The dates fit.
Sophia Romano would be fifty-five now.
Ethan was thirty-four.
Hannah called him through the secure line Matteo had maintained.
For the first time, Adrian heard his voice.
Calm.
Careful.
Alive.
“You found the records.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“Did you know?”
“Not at first.”
“When?”
“After the accident.”
Ethan’s mother, Sophia Carter, had died four years earlier.
She told him very little about her childhood.
Only that her mother came from a powerful Italian family and gave her up to relatives.
After Sophia died, Ethan found a sealed letter.
Celeste Moretti was his grandmother.
That meant Adrian and Dominic were his uncles.
Potentially.
DNA later could verify.
“What did your mother want?”
“Nothing from Moretti.”
“Then why did you take a job here?”
“I didn’t know the connection when I joined Logistics.”
Coincidence.
Messy.
Real.
Then after discovering lineage, Ethan began examining family structures.
Not for money.
To understand.
That was how he noticed his grandmother’s fallback-trust line.
If Adrian became incapacitated suspiciously, Sophia’s descendants could be asked to serve as independent trustee.
Ethan.
Dominic’s hidden problem.
“Did Dominic know who you were?”
“No.”
“Then why threaten you?”
“Shipping records.”
Important.
The danger began before bloodline.
Then Ethan said:
“But someone else knew.”
“Who?”
“Evers.”
Dr. Paul Evers.
Again.
Evers had access to family medical histories.
He recognized Ethan’s genetic marker from old Moretti files.
He contacted Dominic privately.
According to Ethan, that happened after the accident.
Dominic denied remembering.
Maybe lie.
Maybe truth.
Then Ethan sent proof.
An email from Evers:
If Carter survives, verify maternal lineage immediately.
Why?
Because Ethan’s existence activated the fallback clause.
That meant if Adrian’s incapacity were challenged, Dominic’s control could be blocked by a man he did not even know was family.
Suddenly Ethan’s disappearance benefited Dominic more than Adrian realized.
Not proof Dominic caused the crash.
But motive.
Then independent investigators found maintenance records.
Brake line damage had been reported after the collision.
Could be accident-related.
Could be prior.
No certainty.
The mechanic who inspected the truck had since died.
Again.
No clean answer.
Adrian hated uncertainty.
But uncertainty was not permission to invent guilt.
Then Lily wandered into the library carrying cookies.
Everyone stopped.
Ethan’s voice came through speaker.
“Is that Lily?”
Hannah smiled for the first time in days.
“Yes.”
Lily leaned toward the phone.
“Daddy?”
Adrian looked away.
That moment belonged to them.
Ethan had stayed hidden to keep Hannah and Lily safe.
But safety had cost his daughter three years.
Sound familiar.
Families repeating themselves.
Lily asked:
“When are you coming home?”
Silence.
Ethan started crying.
“Soon.”
Not a promise he made lightly.
Then Adrian said:
“Come home.”
Matteo looked at him.
Dominic was in another secured part of the estate under legal supervision.
Not imprisoned.
Not free to interfere with records.
Investigations expanding.
Ethan hesitated.
“What about Dominic?”
“I will handle Dominic with lawyers and boards.”
Ethan laughed.
“That sounds unlike Moretti.”
“Good.”
Two days later, Ethan returned.
Lily ran across the courtyard so fast she dropped her rabbit.
Hannah collapsed into his arms.
Adrian watched.
Something inside him cracked.
He had nearly become a man people were afraid to come home to.
Then Ethan met Adrian privately.
He brought one final piece of evidence.
Not about Dominic.
About Antonio.
Adrian’s father.
A sealed letter Celeste sent Sophia before dying.
Inside:
My sons are being raised to believe power makes them safe.
It does not.
Then:
If Adrian ever becomes ill and Dominic becomes powerful because of it, do not assume Dominic started the sickness.
Adrian stopped breathing.
What did that mean?
Celeste continued:
The Moretti succession conflict began before either boy was born.
And the person most likely to repeat it is not my younger son.
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Who?”
Ethan unfolded the final page.
May you like
One name.
Mrs. Ricci.
