Chapter 1 - THE CUP ON THE DESK

The man Adrian called was named Matteo Russo.

Officially, Matteo had retired from the Moretti organization five years earlier after a heart attack.

Unofficially, he had never stopped watching.

He arrived at the estate forty minutes later through the service entrance wearing a dark wool coat and carrying no visible weapon.

Adrian met him in the library.

The untouched tea sat between them in a sealed glass container.

Matteo looked at it.

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

Adrian hated that word.

He preferred facts.

Lily’s three-year-old testimony was not proof.

It was a clue.

And clues were dangerous only when arrogant men mistook them for conclusions.

“Get it tested,” Adrian said. “Not through our doctors. Not through anybody Dominic knows.”

Matteo nodded.

“What do you want me to tell him?”

“Nothing.”

“What about the kitchen?”

“Nothing.”

“The housekeeper?”

Adrian’s eyes shifted toward the hallway.

Lily’s mother, Hannah Carter, had been working at the estate for fourteen months.

Quiet.

Careful.

Never involved in Moretti business.

That was why Adrian trusted her around the private floors.

And that was exactly why Dominic might underestimate her.

“Hannah knows nothing yet.”

Matteo studied him.

“Yet?”

Adrian did not answer.

Then footsteps approached.

Dominic entered the library without knocking.

His younger brother looked perfect.

Charcoal suit.

Silver watch.

No exhaustion beneath his eyes.

For years, Adrian had watched Dominic grow sharper while he himself became slower.

At first, he had been grateful.

Now every grateful memory felt contaminated.

“You’re awake early,” Dominic said.

Adrian looked at the clock.

8:26 a.m.

“I slept.”

Dominic stopped.

Only for half a second.

Then he smiled.

“Finally.”

Matteo saw it too.

That tiny pause.

“Seven hours.”

Dominic’s smile stayed.

“That’s good.”

“Very.”

His eyes moved toward the empty tea tray.

“Did you take the new medication?”

“No.”

“Then maybe the tea helped.”

Adrian almost laughed.

Instead:

“I didn’t drink it.”

Another tiny pause.

Dominic recovered.

“Maybe exhaustion finally won.”

“Maybe.”

Silence.

Then Dominic looked at Matteo.

“I thought you were retired.”

“So did my wife.”

Matteo smiled.

Adrian almost did.

Dominic did not.

“What are you doing here?”

“Came to complain about pension paperwork.”

Adrian said:

“He has terrible timing.”

Dominic’s eyes stayed on the sealed glass container.

Too long.

Then he asked casually:

“Where’s last night’s tea?”

Adrian looked directly at him.

“Why?”

Dominic shrugged.

“Mrs. Ricci likes the cups returned before breakfast.”

That was true.

Also strange.

He had never asked before.

Adrian leaned back.

“It broke.”

Dominic nodded slowly.

“Shame.”

Then he changed the subject.

A shipping contract.

A meeting.

A vote.

Ordinary business.

But his left thumb kept rubbing the side of his index finger.

Dominic did that when he was worried.

Adrian had seen it since they were boys.

Thirty minutes later, Dominic left.

Matteo waited until the door closed.

“He knows something.”

“Yes.”

“About the tea?”

“Maybe.”

“About Lily?”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“No.”

That had to stay true.

Lily was a child.

Not evidence.

Not bait.

Not leverage.

He would burn half his empire before allowing anyone to treat her like one.

Matteo took the tea for testing.

Adrian returned upstairs.

Hannah was in the hallway holding Lily’s hand.

She looked embarrassed.

“I’m sorry she wandered into your room last night.”

Lily grinned.

“I fixed him.”

Adrian crouched.

“You did.”

Hannah’s face changed.

“What did she do?”

“Read me a story.”

Lily proudly announced:

“And I told him about Uncle Dominic’s bad tea.”

Hannah went completely still.

Adrian saw it.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Hannah.”

She looked toward Lily.

Then toward the stairwell.

“Sweetheart, go ask Mrs. Ricci for pancakes.”

Lily ran away.

Only after she disappeared did Hannah whisper:

“You need to stop drinking anything your brother brings you.”

Adrian’s blood went cold.

“You knew?”

“No.”

“Then why are you afraid?”

Hannah looked toward the closed bedroom door.

“Because Lily isn’t the first person in this house who saw him put something in your tea.”

Silence.

“Who else?”

She swallowed.

“My husband.”

Adrian stared.

“I thought Lily’s father was dead.”

May you like

Hannah’s eyes filled.

“That’s what Dominic told everyone.”
