Chapter 8 - Room 314

Maya spent six hours in a holding room before a lawyer Elias trusted secured her release.

She refused to see Elias when he arrived.

"You let them take me."

"I had to keep the case from becoming a war."

"You had to protect your reputation."

His jaw tightened.

"That's not fair."

"Neither was being arrested for a crime I didn't commit."

She walked past him.

He followed her outside into the bitter afternoon air.

"I found something about Room 314," he said.

Maya stopped.

"It's a storage room in an old hotel your mother used to rent," Elias continued. "The building was sold years ago. The new owner is one of my companies."

She stared at him.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

"Because I wanted to know whether Adrian was watching us."

"And?"

"He was."

Elias opened the passenger door of the waiting SUV.

Maya hesitated before getting inside.

They drove through the city without speaking. Snow still covered the sidewalks, and the holiday decorations seemed strangely out of place beneath the gray sky.

The old hotel stood near the river, its faded sign barely visible above a boarded entrance. Elias's men had secured the building, but he insisted on taking Maya upstairs himself.

Room 314 was locked behind a rusted door.

The silver key turned.

Inside, they found a metal box, a stack of old photographs, and a tape recorder wrapped in a child's blanket.

Maya picked up the blanket.

It smelled faintly of cedar and dust.

"My mother kept this."

Elias examined the metal box. Inside lay a birth certificate, a bank ledger, and a letter addressed to Elena Hart.

The letter was signed by Antonio Conti.

Elena, if anything happens to me, protect our children. Victor has discovered the accounts. He knows about the shipments, the bribes, and the names of the men who ordered the killings. I fear he intends to silence us both.

Maya's fingers trembled.

"Our children," she whispered.

Elias looked at the birth certificate.

Two names were listed beneath Antonio's.

Elias Conti.

And a second child, born six years later.

Adrian Vale.

Maya sank onto the dusty bed.

"Adrian is your brother."

"Half-brother," Elias said. "And if my father wrote this, he may have been trying to protect him, too."

Maya turned on the tape recorder.

Static hissed through the speaker. Then a man's voice filled the room.

Antonio Conti.

"If you're hearing this, Elena, I failed. Victor has betrayed me. But the worst danger is not Victor. It's the person I trusted to take my place."

A pause followed.

Then Antonio whispered a name.

Maya gripped Elias's arm.

The voice continued.

"Do not let him become boss. He will destroy everything I built."

The tape crackled.

May you like

A final sentence emerged, barely audible.

"And if Elias ever discovers what happened to his real mother, he must never trust the woman who raised him."
