Chapter 7 - The Arrest That Changed Everything

The knock came three minutes later.

Elias opened the suite door to find Adrian Vale standing in the corridor, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit. Two officers flanked him. A gray-haired judge held a folder beneath one arm.

Adrian's gaze moved past Elias and settled on Maya.

"There you are," he said softly. "We've been looking for you."

Maya stepped back.

Elias moved in front of her.

"Explain."

Adrian sighed as if disappointed by a child.

"Maya Hart is a suspect in the theft of confidential financial records and the attempted blackmail of the Conti family. We have evidence she accessed restricted files last night."

"Evidence you manufactured," Maya said.

One officer reached for her wrist.

Elias caught his hand before he touched her.

"Try that again," Elias said quietly, "and you'll leave this hotel without the hand you used."

"Mr. Conti," the judge warned, "you are obstructing a lawful arrest."

Elias released the officer.

"Then show me the evidence."

Adrian handed him a folder.

Inside were photographs of Maya entering restricted offices, copies of financial records, and an unsigned letter demanding five million dollars.

Every document was convincing.

Every document was a lie.

Maya stared at the letter.

"I've never seen that."

"Of course not," Adrian said. "You're very good at pretending to be innocent."

Elias turned a page.

There was a bank transfer from an account in Maya's name to a shell company connected to one of the Conti family's enemies.

His face hardened.

"Who opened this account?"

"Your secretary," Adrian replied.

"She's been working for me for two years. She doesn't have access to my private banking system."

"Unless someone helped her."

The implication hung between them.

Adrian was accusing Elias of complicity without saying the words.

Maya suddenly reached for the folder.

"Look at the dates!"

The judge frowned.

"What?"

"Those transfers happened before I started working for Mr. Conti. And the account number—it's not mine. The final four digits are wrong."

Elias checked.

She was right.

Adrian's smile vanished for a fraction of a second.

It was enough.

Elias handed the documents back to the judge.

"This evidence is fabricated."

"That is for the court to decide," the judge replied.

The officers moved toward Maya.

Elias could have stopped them. One call would have emptied the corridor and sent everyone running.

But if he used force, Adrian would have exactly what he wanted: proof that Elias was an unstable criminal protecting a suspect.

Maya touched Elias's arm.

"Don't."

He looked down at her.

For the first time, she wasn't asking him to save her.

She was asking him to trust her.

He stepped aside.

The officers escorted Maya toward the elevator.

Adrian followed, pausing beside Elias.

"You should have stayed at your party," he murmured. "Some things are safer when nobody looks too closely."

Elias grabbed his collar.

"Touch her, and I'll destroy you."

Adrian didn't flinch.

"You can't destroy what belongs to you."

May you like

Then he leaned closer.

"Ask your mother why she named me Adrian instead of Antonio."
