Chapter 12 - The Trap at Noon

Elias knew the courthouse was a trap.
He also knew he was going anyway.
Michael might be his brother. Maya might be the only person who could uncover the truth. And Adrian had made one fatal mistake: he believed family was a weakness Elias could exploit.
At eleven fifty, Elias parked two blocks from the courthouse.
Maya climbed out beside him.
"You said you'd go alone."
"I said I wouldn't bring soldiers."
She glanced at the empty street.
"You're not planning to leave me behind, are you?"
"No."
"Good. Because I'm done being hidden."
They entered through the side door.
The building smelled of damp stone and old paper. Sunlight filtered through broken windows, illuminating dust in the abandoned courtroom.
Adrian stood behind the judge's bench.
Beside him was Victor Raines, the scarred man from the security footage.
Between them knelt Michael, his hands bound, his face bruised.
Elias stopped.
Michael looked up.
For one terrible moment, Elias saw his own eyes staring back at him.
"Let him go," Elias said.
Adrian smiled.
"Always giving orders. That's what Father taught you."
"Father taught me to protect my family."
"No. He taught you to inherit it."
Adrian stepped down from the bench.
"I spent my life watching you receive everything. The name. The estate. The loyalty. The fear. Meanwhile, I was hidden in a house with a man who taught me that love was something weak people used to control each other."
Victor's expression remained unreadable.
"Your mother tried to save you," Maya said.
Adrian turned on her.
"My mother? You mean the woman who abandoned me?"
"She separated you to keep you alive."
"She chose Elias."
"She didn't choose any of us," Maya replied. "She was trying to save all three."
For a second, something uncertain flickered across Adrian's face.
Then Victor raised his gun.
"Enough. We have the ledger, the clinic records, and the only witness left who can connect us to Antonio's crimes."
Elias's gaze shifted to the envelope in Victor's hand.
"The original ledger."
Victor nodded.
"Your father built an empire on blood. He wanted to destroy it before he died. I convinced him otherwise."
"You killed him."
"I protected the family."
"You murdered my mother."
Victor's silence was answer enough.
Maya took a careful step forward.
"Where is Antonio?"
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"Still alive. Still hiding. Still waiting for one of us to finish what he started."
A sharp sound echoed through the courtroom.
A gunshot.
Michael collapsed.
Maya screamed.
Elias lunged forward, but Victor aimed his weapon at Maya's head.
"One more step," he warned, "and your sister dies."
Elias froze.
May you like
Then Michael, bleeding on the floor, raised his face and whispered something that made Adrian's expression collapse.
"You have it backward, Adrian. You weren't the forgotten son. You were the one Father paid to kill us."
