Chapter 6 - The Seven-Year Ghost

Back at the Vance Medical Research Institute, dawn broke over the Boston skyline in a pale, golden canopy of light.
I walked into the observation suite adjoining Leo’s sterile room, finding Nora sitting by the glass window with her head resting against the frame.
She looked up as I entered, her face pale but her eyes clearer than they had been in years.
Through the glass, little Leo was sleeping peacefully, his vital signs displayed on the high-tech digital monitors in steady, green rhythms.
I sat down in the leather chair beside her, setting the silver locket on the small wooden table between us.
“Dr. Sterling has been arrested by federal authorities, Nora,” I informed her softly.
“And Julian will never step foot in this city again.”
Nora closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to release seven years of trapped terror.
“Damian loved you so much, Matteo,” she whispered, her voice thick with bittersweet memories.
“He used to tell me that if anything ever happened to him, you would be the only one strong enough to hold the world together.”
“Why didn't you trust that I would protect you, Nora?” I asked, the lingering ache of my brother’s absence heavy in my voice.
“Because on the night Damian died, Julian came to my apartment with three armed men,” Nora confessed, looking down at her hands.
“Julian told me that you were the one who planted the bomb under Damian’s car so you could take over the family syndicate.”
“He threatened to murder my unborn child and frame me for corporate espionage if I didn't vanish from Massachusetts forever.”
I felt a cold, deadly chill race down my spine as the full depth of Julian’s monstrous treachery was laid bare.

Julian had not just murdered my brother; he had weaponized my brother’s death to terrify a grieving, pregnant woman into living as a destitute runaway.
For seven years, Nora had lived in fear of me, believing the man whose floors she scrubbed was the monster who killed her fiancé.
“I spent seven years grieving my brother and hunting ghosts, Nora,” I said, reaching out and gently covering her trembling hand with mine.
“I swear to you on Damian’s soul that I would have torn this entire city apart with my bare hands before letting a single hair on his head be harmed.”
Nora looked into my eyes, seeing the raw, unyielding truth reflected in my gaze, and for the first time, the wall of fear between us dissolved completely.
“I know that now, Matteo,” she said softly, squeezing my hand with genuine warmth.
“When you stood between Leo and that administrator tonight… I saw Damian standing right beside you.”
Before I could answer, the red emergency alarm on Leo’s telemetry monitor began shrieking in rapid, terrifying bursts.
