Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY THAT WASN'T REAL

:

The DNA investigation lasted months.

It uncovered something unbelievable.

My father's original records had been altered.

My mother's had been altered.

Elliot's had been altered.

Even mine.

The truth was hidden inside old medical files.

The Hale family had been changing identities for generations.

Why?

To protect ownership.

To manipulate inheritances.

To control companies.

People weren't raised as themselves.

They were raised as assets.

My own birth had been used as a legal anchor.

I wasn't the only heir.

I was the only person they believed could be controlled.

Until I refused.

The final report revealed Elliot's biological father.

Not Richard Hale.

Not anyone in the family.

A doctor.

Dr. Samuel Price.

Eleanor's brother.

The same family that had built the network.

That meant the conspiracy was bigger than the Hales.

It was a consortium.

Families.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Bankers.

Politicians.

All connected.

And my father had spent his final years trying to dismantle it.

He had built Glass House as a weapon against them.

Then Nathaniel tried to steal it.

We made the archive public.

Thousands of people learned the truth.

The government opened investigations across multiple states.

The consortium collapsed.

For the first time in decades, no one controlled the network.

But the most painful part wasn't the money.

It was my family.

My mother had spent years protecting me.

My father had spent his life building a trap.

Elliot had spent years believing he didn't belong.

And Nathaniel—

Nathaniel had been raised to believe power was love.

He had never learned the difference.

I visited him in prison once.

He looked thinner.

Older.

“Why did you come?”

“To understand.”

He laughed.

“You already won.”

“This isn't about winning.”

“Then what?”

“Why me?”

He stared.

“My father said you were the only person who could inherit without being corrupted.”

I felt sick.

“He knew.”

“Yes.”

“And he wanted you to marry me.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever love me?”

He looked away.

For a long time.

Then he whispered:

“At first.”

I closed my eyes.

“And later?”

“I loved the idea of owning you.”

The honesty hurt more than any lie.

I stood.

“Goodbye, Nathaniel.”

He looked at me.

“You'll always be part of this family.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“I chose my own family.”

I walked away.

Outside the prison, Elliot was waiting.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Liar.”

I laughed.

“Probably.”

He smiled.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A house.”

“Whose?”

“My mother’s.”

I stared.

“The house she grew up in.”

“Where?”

“Seattle.”

My blood ran cold.

“What's there?”

“The original Glass House.”

I froze.

“The physical archive?”

Elliot nodded.

“Everything.”

We drove there the next morning.

The house had been empty for fifty years.

Inside was a basement.

Behind a false wall was a steel door.

The key was my father's signet ring.

We opened it.

Boxes filled the room.

Photographs.

Letters.

Birth records.

DNA reports.

And one envelope.

My name.

VALERIE.

I opened it.

My father's handwriting.

This is the final truth.

You were never meant to inherit the empire.

I stared.

You were meant to destroy it.

I smiled through tears.

He had known.

All along.

Then one final sentence:

When you find this, forgive yourself.

I closed my eyes.

For eight years, I thought my greatest mistake was trusting Nathaniel.

It wasn't.

My greatest mistake was believing the lies people told me about myself.

I was not weak.

I was not a trophy wife.

I was not a beneficiary to be controlled.

I was the woman who survived.

And then I heard something behind me.

A door closing.

I turned.

A little girl stood in the basement.

About ten years old.

Holding an old family photograph.

She looked at me.

“Are you Valerie Hale?”

“Yes.”

She whispered:

“My mother told me to find you.”

I stared.

“Who is your mother?”

The girl held out the photograph.

My blood ran cold.

It was Margaret.

But Margaret was in prison.

May you like

Then the girl whispered:

“She said you're the only person who can save us.”
