Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE FAMILY

:
Eleanor Price disappeared before dawn.
Her office was empty.
Her home was empty.
Her bank accounts closed.
But people like Eleanor don't simply vanish.
They leave trails.
Marcus returned.
I hadn't told him about Elliot's warning.
Now I did.
He listened without defending himself.
Then he said:
“He was right to be suspicious.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I worked with Eleanor.”
I stared.
“On what?”
“Your father's estate.”
My stomach tightened.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“That's not good enough.”
He nodded.
“You're right.”
He gave me a file.
“Read.”
The first page contained Eleanor's handwriting.
Nathaniel must marry Valerie.
The second:
The trust requires bloodline continuity.
The third:
If Richard resists, remove him.
I felt sick.
“Eleanor planned my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“And my father's death.”
“Yes.”
“And Nathaniel knew.”
“Yes.”
“Did my mother?”
“No.”
“Then why did Elliot say she helped conceal evidence?”
“Because she did.”
I stared.
“Why?”
Marcus answered:
“Because Eleanor threatened you.”
I closed my eyes.
Everyone had been making choices around me.
Thinking they were protecting me.
No one had asked what I wanted.
Marcus continued.
“Your mother signed a false statement after your father's death.”
“Why?”
“To keep Eleanor from targeting you.”
“That doesn't make her guilty.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“It makes her scared.”
I read the rest of the file.
Eleanor had created Nathaniel's shell companies.
She had helped him forge my signature.
She had arranged the crash.
She had even planted the hospital incident.
My blood ran cold.
“She wanted me dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the Glass House trust activates only after the heir survives a confirmed attempt on her life.”
I stared.
“What?”
Marcus nodded.
“Your father built the final condition.”
“So surviving the crash activated the trust.”
“Yes.”
“And Nathaniel's assault made it stronger.”
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
“He tried to kill me and accidentally made me the most powerful person in the network.”
Marcus smiled.
“Pretty much.”
Then Elliot entered.
He looked at Marcus.
“Can we trust him?”
I answered.
“Yes.”
Marcus smiled faintly.
“High praise.”
Elliot placed a folder on the table.
“Eleanor contacted me.”
“Where?”
“Portland.”
“Why?”
“She wants the Glass House archive.”
I frowned.
“She thinks it still contains the evidence.”
“It does.”
“Where?”
Elliot looked at me.
“Your wedding ring.”
I touched the ring I had never removed.
“What?”
“The inner band contains a biometric drive.”
Marcus stared.
“Nathaniel never knew.”
“Because he never thought to examine it.”
I removed the ring.
A tiny panel slid open.
A data chip.
I stared.
“My father put this here.”
“Yes.”
I inserted it into Marcus's laptop.
A final folder appeared.
FAMILY.
Inside was a video.
My father.
Alive.
The day before his death.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Valerie.”
I cried.
“If you're watching this, Eleanor has failed.”
He paused.
“I chose Nathaniel because I knew he would betray you.”
I stared.
“He was never meant to inherit.”
“He was meant to reveal the network.”
My heart stopped.
“But if you're watching this, you have survived.”
He smiled.
“I am proud of you.”
Then he said the one sentence that changed everything:
“Your mother is not the person who betrayed me.”
The video ended.
Elliot looked at me.
Marcus was silent.
I whispered:
“Then who did?”
Eleanor's name wasn't enough.
My father had known.
He had planned for her.
Then why had he died?
The answer came from the final hidden file.
A photograph.
My father.
Eleanor.
Nathaniel's father.
And one more person.
Nathaniel.
Standing there as a teenager.
Watching.
May you like
He had known.
All along.
