Chapter 8 - THE AUNT WHO OWNED THE SHADOWS

:

Margaret Hale lived in Vancouver under a different name.

She had been building companies for thirty years.

Real companies.

Clean companies.

Respected companies.

But underneath them was the original network.

The source of everything.

We met her in a private office overlooking the harbor.

She looked elegant.

Calm.

Old.

But dangerous.

“Valerie.”

I stared at her.

“You killed my father.”

She smiled.

“No.”

“You ordered it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he was going to destroy the family.”

“The family was corrupt.”

“The family was powerful.”

“That's not the same thing.”

She laughed.

“You still sound like your father.”

Elliot stepped forward.

“You erased me.”

“I protected you.”

“You imprisoned me.”

“You were ill.”

“You hid me.”

“You were useful as a secret.”

I felt sick.

Margaret looked at me.

“Your father ruined everything.”

“How?”

“He wanted to expose the network.”

“And you stopped him.”

“Yes.”

“But why did you let him build Glass House?”

“Because I underestimated him.”

She smiled.

“He built a system that could outlive all of us.”

I looked at her.

“And Nathaniel?”

“A pawn.”

“Eleanor?”

“A pawn.”

“My mother?”

“She was collateral.”

I felt my hands shake.

“You ruined everyone's life.”

Margaret shrugged.

“Power always has a price.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You were willing to pay it with other people's lives.”

She stared at me.

“What will you do with the empire?”

“Destroy the criminal side.”

“You'll regret it.”

“Why?”

“Because one day you'll need power.”

I smiled.

“I already have something better.”

“What?”

“Evidence.”

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“We uploaded everything.”

Her expression changed.

“You didn't.”

Elliot nodded.

“The archive is public.”

Margaret stared at us.

“Then you have nothing.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You have nothing.”

Federal agents entered.

Margaret was arrested.

But she didn't look afraid.

She looked almost amused.

As agents escorted her away, she whispered:

“This isn't over.”

I believed her.

Yet this time, I wasn't afraid.

The network was exposed.

The money was frozen.

The family secrets were public.

Nathaniel was in prison.

Eleanor testified.

My mother was safe.

Elliot was free.

The empire was no longer a weapon.

It was just a collection of legitimate companies waiting for a future.

Then Marcus gave me one final file.

A DNA report.

“What is this?”

He looked at me.

“You asked us to verify Elliot's identity.”

“And?”

“He isn't your half-brother.”

I froze.

“What?”

Marcus showed me the results.

Elliot was not Richard Hale's biological son.

My heart stopped.

“Then who is his father?”

Elliot looked at me.

“I don't know.”

The report contained one more line.

MATERNAL MATCH: UNKNOWN.

I stared.

“That's impossible.”

Marcus nodded.

“Unless someone deliberately altered the records.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?”

The answer appeared on the screen.

A hidden profile.

SUBJECT: MARGARET HALE.

I looked at Elliot.

He looked at me.

And suddenly the entire family tree was wrong.

My father.

My mother.

Margaret.

Elliot.

Maybe all of us.

Someone had built an identity system so deep that even our DNA had been manipulated.

The question wasn't who inherited the empire.

It was:

Who were we?
