Chapter 9 - THE FILE WITH MY NAME ON IT

Daniel was waiting at the police station.

His face was bruised.

But he was alive.

Adrian hugged him.

Then stepped back.

“What did you find?”

Daniel handed him a file.

“Vanessa wasn't the only person watching Lily.”

Adrian opened it.

There were photographs.

Medical records.

School reports.

Bank statements.

And documents dating back to Lily's birth.

But one document made Adrian stop.

A custody agreement.

It named Eleanor as the emergency guardian.

The date was the day Lily was born.

“How?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Your mother arranged it before Lily was born.”

Adrian felt sick.

“She planned this before Lily even existed?”

“Yes.”

Then Daniel showed him something else.

A recording.

Adrian pressed play.

His own voice came through.

From twelve years earlier.

He was talking to his father.

“I don't want anything to do with the trust.”

Adrian stared.

“I said that?”

Robert nodded.

“You did.”

“I don't remember.”

“You were drugged.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

Robert explained.

Eleanor had been manipulating Adrian's medical treatment after a serious accident.

She wanted him to appear unstable.

That would make the trust easier to control.

Adrian's hands shook.

“How long?”

“Years.”

Then the final file opened.

It contained a photograph of Eleanor meeting a judge.

Another of a bank executive.

Another of a doctor.

The network was documented.

Every payment.

Every favor.

Every lie.

Detective Morgan looked at the evidence.

“This will dismantle the entire operation.”

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Where is Vanessa?”

“She gave herself up.”

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She wants to testify.”

Adrian nodded.

“She should.”

Then Lily entered the room.

Adrian dropped everything.

He knelt.

She ran into his arms.

“Dad.”

He held her tightly.

“You're safe.”

She whispered:

“Are you mad at me?”

“Never.”

“Did I do something bad?”

Adrian's eyes filled with tears.

“No.”

She looked at his bandaged hands.

“Why do grown-ups lie?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Sometimes they're afraid.”

“Were you afraid?”

“Yes.”

She hugged him tighter.

“But you came back.”

“I always will.”

Detective Morgan watched quietly.

Then her phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She listened.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Eleanor escaped custody.”

Adrian froze.

“How?”

“She had help.”

“Who?”

Morgan hesitated.

“The judge from the photograph.”

Adrian's stomach dropped.

The network wasn't finished.

Then Lily whispered:

“Dad.”

He looked down.

“I know that man.”

“What?”

“He came to our house before.”

Adrian stared.

“When?”

“Last Christmas.”

May you like

The man who had helped Eleanor escape had been inside their home.

And Lily had seen him.
