Chapter 8 - THE BARN

The old farm looked abandoned.
Fog covered the fields.
Adrian entered the barn alone.
Or at least that's what Eleanor believed.
Hidden officers surrounded the property.
A small camera was attached beneath Adrian's jacket.
“Where's Lily?” he called.
Eleanor stepped from the shadows.
“She's safe.”
“Daniel?”
“Alive.”
“Let them go.”
“Sign the trust.”
Adrian held up the documents.
“You first.”
Eleanor smiled.
“You still think this is about money.”
“What else is there?”
“Revenge.”
She walked closer.
“Your father destroyed my life.”
Robert's voice came from behind the barn door.
“No.”
Eleanor turned.
“You're alive.”
Robert stepped into the light.
“You've always blamed everyone else.”
Eleanor's expression hardened.
“You left me.”
“You tried to kill me.”
“You deserved it.”
Adrian stared at them.
“How did this start?”
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“Your father discovered what I was doing.”
Robert corrected her.
“She was laundering money through the family trust.”
Eleanor glared at him.
“And he threatened to expose me.”
“So you staged his death.”
“Yes.”
“And then you used Vanessa?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Vanessa was useful.”
Adrian felt disgusted.
“What about Lily?”
“She was never supposed to be hurt.”
“Then why did she have injuries?”
Eleanor's expression changed.
“I told Vanessa to frighten her.”
Adrian stared.
“Frighten?”
“She needed to become dependent.”
“You burned her hands.”
Eleanor looked away.
“I didn't order that.”
For the first time, genuine anger appeared in her voice.
“Vanessa went too far.”
Adrian understood.
Vanessa had not merely followed orders.
She had become something worse.
Then another voice came from behind Eleanor.
“That's not true.”
Vanessa.
She stepped into the barn.
Her face was bruised.
She held a flash drive.
Eleanor turned.
“You.”
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“I recorded everything.”
Eleanor's face went white.
Vanessa continued.
“Every order.”
Every payment.
Every conversation.
“Why?”
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“Because Lily reminded me of myself.”
Adrian stared.
“What happened to you?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“I was one of the children.”
Silence.
She had been controlled by Eleanor years earlier.
She had been taught to obey.
Then she had repeated the same pattern.
Adrian couldn't excuse what Vanessa had done.
But suddenly he understood how the cycle had survived.
Eleanor tried to run.
Police stormed the barn.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Eleanor froze.
Vanessa dropped the flash drive.
Detective Morgan picked it up.
Then she looked at Adrian.
“We have everything.”
But before anyone could celebrate, Adrian's phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
