Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN BEHIND VANESSA

Adrian stared at Robert.

“My mother?”

Robert nodded.

“Your mother is alive.”

Adrian couldn't speak.

His mother had supposedly died when Lily was three.

A stroke.

A funeral.

A grave.

Everything had been documented.

Everything had been a lie.

“Why would she do this?”

Robert's face was full of regret.

“Because she wanted control of the family trust.”

Adrian shook his head.

“My mother loved Lily.”

“She loved power more.”

Robert explained that Adrian's mother, Eleanor, had been involved with the same network.

She had recruited Vanessa.

She had arranged Robert's disappearance.

And when Adrian inherited the family estate, Eleanor realized she couldn't control him directly.

So she used Vanessa.

Marriage.

Isolation.

Surveillance.

Financial pressure.

And eventually Lily.

Adrian felt sick.

“Why hurt my daughter?”

“Because she knew Lily was the one person you would never abandon.”

Robert looked at him.

“They wanted you desperate.”

“For what?”

“To sign over the trust.”

Adrian remembered the guardianship document.

It suddenly made sense.

Vanessa didn't simply want to control Lily.

She wanted legal control over everything Adrian owned.

His estate.

His businesses.

His investments.

His daughter's inheritance.

Then Robert said something that changed everything.

“Eleanor didn't act alone.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Who else?”

Robert handed him a folder.

Inside was a list of names.

Attorneys.

Bankers.

Doctors.

Judges.

Private investigators.

The network was enormous.

Adrian stared at the final name.

Daniel.

His brother.

“Daniel betrayed me.”

Robert shook his head.

“No.”

“He kidnapped Lily.”

“To protect her.”

Adrian looked confused.

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he didn't know whom to trust.”

Robert explained that Daniel had been investigating Vanessa for years.

The recording in Lily's room had been Daniel's attempt to document the abuse.

He had placed the recorder there.

He had hidden the evidence.

And he had staged Lily's disappearance only long enough to draw Adrian away from the estate.

Adrian's anger began to fade.

Then his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

“Adrian.”

Her voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Terrified.

“Listen to me.”

“Where are you?”

“I'm running.”

“From whom?”

She whispered:

“Your mother.”

Silence.

“She knows Robert is alive.”

Adrian's grip tightened.

“Where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Then tell me where Lily's safe.”

“She's with Daniel.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“Because I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“I thought I was controlling your family.”

She began crying.

“I was wrong.”

Adrian heard a door slam.

Vanessa whispered:

“She controls everyone.”

Then the line went dead.

Robert looked at Adrian.

“She'll try to disappear.”

“Can we find her?”

Robert nodded.

“But there's something else.”

“What?”

Robert pointed toward the folder.

“Your mother has a plan for tonight.”

Adrian opened the final page.

A location.

The estate.

A time.

Midnight.

And one sentence:

BRING THE CHILD.
