Chapter 7 - THE WOMAN WITH EVERY PASSWORD

The thief was not a Thorne.
That was Dileia’s first conclusion.
Everyone kept searching bloodlines.
Brothers.
Uncles.
Trusted men.
But the false approvals used different habits from different executives.
Someone knew them intimately.
Which signature included initials.
Which login happened before coffee.
Which accounts Julian reviewed personally.
Which ones Augustus ignored.
Dileia asked:
“Who administered all senior accounts?”
Julian answered:
“Executive finance.”
“Who ran it?”
Silence.
Then:
“Marianne Cole.”
Chief financial officer.
Fifty-four.
Worked for Thorn Tower twenty-eight years.
She had trained half the accountants.
Attended Augustus’s funeral.
Sent flowers when Tommy died.
Dileia remembered her from cleaning nights.
Elegant.
Quiet.
Always gone before midnight.
Except one thing.
The conference room where Dileia found the forty-million pattern had been scheduled under Marianne’s credentials.
Why leave the screen active?
Carelessness?
Or bait?
Julian called her office.
Empty.
Computer wiped.
Phone abandoned.
Then Dileia found a handwritten note beneath her keyboard.
For the widow.
Not Julian.
Dileia opened it.
You see patterns because Thomas taught you to look where proud men don’t.
Then:
He was close.
Too close.
Dileia felt ice in her veins.
Marianne had known Tommy personally.
Julian searched old personnel files.
Twenty years earlier, Marianne Cole had another surname.
Marianne Hail.
Dileia stared.
“Related to Tommy?”
Mrs. Ruth supplied the answer.
“His aunt.”
Tommy’s father’s sister.
Estranged for decades.
Ruth had hated her.
Why?
Marianne blamed Ruth for helping Augustus bury Harbor 17 rather than exposing everything.
Family fracture.
Then Marianne married, changed names, and quietly entered Thorn finance.
For nearly three decades, she sat inside the empire.
Watching.
Collecting.
Moving money.
But to what end?
Dileia opened the last line of the note.
The forty million was not stolen.
It was escrow.
For evidence.
Proof cost money when everyone who has it is afraid.
Then a password.
Dileia entered it into Tommy’s encrypted folder.
Hundreds of files opened.
Payments to witnesses.
Former workers.
Lawyers.
Investigators.
Safe housing.
Marianne had used Thorne money to preserve testimony against Vincent’s network.
Illegal diversion?
Yes.
But not personal theft.
Then Julian found the devastating part.
Tommy had joined Marianne.
Not merely discovered her.
He had helped build the forty-million evidence fund.
Dileia’s husband had been secretly stealing from Thorne Holdings too.
For a reason he believed was just.
Then the final file opened.
A video recorded one day before Tommy died.
Marianne and Tommy arguing.
Tommy shouted:
“We tell Julian tomorrow.”
Marianne answered:
“No. Julian is compromised.”
“By who?”
She looked directly toward the camera.
“His brother.”
Julian froze.
“My brother is dead.”
May you like
Marianne replied on the recording:
“No. Sebastian is alive.”
