Chapter 3 - MRS. RUTH HAD WORKED FOR THE THORNES

Mrs. Ruth had not always been a homemaker.

Dileia learned that before breakfast.

For seventeen years, Ruth Hail had worked as a payroll supervisor inside Thorne Freight.

She had processed salaries, dock payments, insurance claims, and confidential discretionary accounts.

Tommy never told Dileia.

Neither had Ruth.

When Dileia asked, the older woman stared at the photograph.

Then whispered:

“Augustus.”

The name returned something.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Real fear.

“He said we should forget.”

“Forget what?”

Ruth looked toward the window.

“The second book.”

Dileia’s pulse jumped.

Julian arrived twenty minutes later with Salenzo.

Not Holloway.

Dileia noticed.

Julian noticed her noticing.

“Where is Holloway?”

“Working.”

“Convenient.”

Salenzo’s jaw tightened.

Julian ignored him.

Dileia showed them Tommy’s video and the photograph.

Salenzo went pale when he saw Ruth.

“You knew her?” Dileia asked.

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

Ruth had discovered a second payroll ledger twenty-six years earlier.

A hidden list of workers who technically did not exist.

Dock crews paid cash.

Drivers using fake names.

Immigrants trapped by debt.

Augustus Thorne’s older brother, Vincent, controlled the operation.

Augustus shut it down after Ruth threatened to go to authorities.

Or so everyone believed.

“Why wasn’t anyone arrested?” Dileia asked.

Salenzo looked ashamed.

“Augustus protected the company.”

Meaning he buried it.

Ruth received money and left.

Not a bribe, Salenzo insisted.

A settlement.

Protection.

Dileia laughed bitterly.

“Rich men love that word.”

Julian said nothing.

Then Ruth whispered:

“Vincent didn’t stop.”

The room became silent.

Vincent Thorne had supposedly died eighteen years earlier.

Plane crash.

No body recovered.

Dileia looked at Julian.

“Was he really dead?”

Julian’s face changed.

“I don’t know.”

That answer was terrifying.

Tommy apparently discovered H-17 was named after Harbor 17—the original dock connected to Vincent’s hidden labor network.

The missing forty million was keeping something from that old system alive.

Then Dileia found another file on Tommy’s laptop.

A payment list.

At the bottom:

HOLLOWAY - $240,000.

She turned the screen.

Salenzo swore.

Julian became still.

“Holloway received money from H-17?”

“Yes.”

Then a second line appeared.

Not payment.

Instruction.

KEEP JULIAN ALIVE UNTIL THE TRANSFER.

Dileia looked at Julian.

“Holloway wasn’t being paid to betray you.”

She swallowed.

“He was being paid to keep you alive for something.”

Julian’s phone rang.

His face hardened as he listened.

When he hung up, he said:

May you like

“Holloway is gone.”

Along with him, the encrypted ledger containing the original forty-million-dollar trail had disappeared.
