Chapter 1 - THE NAME INSIDE THE FORTY MILLION

At 7:12 the next morning, Dileia found Julian Thorne waiting outside her apartment building.

Not Salenzo.

Not Holloway.

Julian himself.

That frightened her more than the gun.

Mrs. Ruth was still asleep when Dileia stepped into the hallway and quietly closed the door behind her.

“You could have called.”

Julian looked at the broken elevator.

“You would have answered?”

“No.”

“Exactly.”

He held a black folder.

The same invoice trail Dileia had circled in red now filled the first twenty pages.

Julian had spent the night following her pattern.

Every three weeks, money left Thorn Maritime through a vendor code labeled H-17.

Fifteen experts missed it because the transactions were split across four operating companies.

Dileia had noticed the rhythm.

Now they knew where it went.

A dormant corporation called Halcyon Asset Recovery.

Owner:

Thomas Hail.

Dileia stopped breathing.

Tommy.

Her dead husband.

“That’s impossible.”

Julian watched her carefully.

“Was Thomas Hail your husband?”

“Yes.”

“He worked in municipal accounting.”

“That’s what he told me.”

Julian opened another page.

Tommy had not worked only for the city.

For eighteen months before his death, he had also been a confidential forensic consultant for Thorn Holdings.

Julian had never met him directly.

The work was routed through Salenzo.

Dileia felt the hallway tilt.

“My husband worked for you?”

“Not for me.”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“For my father.”

Augustus Thorne.

Dead two years.

The man who built the empire Julian inherited.

Dileia remembered Tommy coming home late.

The headaches.

The locked laptop.

The sudden fear whenever unknown numbers called.

She had assumed hospital debt and city audits were crushing him.

Maybe she had never understood his life at all.

“What was he investigating?”

Julian turned the page.

“The same forty million you found.”

Dileia’s hand trembled.

Tommy had discovered the missing money fourteen months before his death.

Then he died in what police called a freeway accident.

His brakes failed during heavy rain.

Case closed.

Julian’s voice dropped.

“My father believed Tommy was murdered.”

Dileia looked at him.

“By who?”

Julian handed her one final page.

A list of people with access to H-17.

Only four names.

Augustus Thorne.

Julian Thorne.

Salenzo Marchetti.

And Holloway.

The huge silent man who had escorted Dileia home the night before.

The man Julian trusted enough to stand behind him with a gun.

One of those four people had been stealing from the Thorne empire.

And Tommy had died after discovering it.
