Chapter 14 - The Birthday Nobody Thought They Would Reach

Sophia turned seven on a bright October morning.
Exactly two years after Titan first let her enter Adrian’s study.
Elena tried to keep the party small.
That failed immediately.
Lucia invited relatives.
Anthony invited half his class.
Mrs. Bellini invited herself.
Dante arrived with a gift wrapped so badly Sophia asked whether Titan had done it.
Miguel brought a bicycle.
Adrian brought nothing visible.
Elena noticed.
“That’s restraint.”
“I’m growing.”
Then a moving truck appeared.
Elena narrowed her eyes.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing extravagant.”
The truck unloaded a custom wooden playhouse shaped like the cottage from Sophia’s favorite picture book.
Elena stared.
“That is literally a house.”
“It has no plumbing.”
“Adrian.”
Anthony laughed.
Sophia screamed with happiness.
Titan immediately claimed the porch.
By noon, the yard was full.
No weapons.
No whispered meetings.
No men standing apart calculating loyalty.
Just children.
Food.
Music.
A dog stealing sausages.
For Adrian, it felt almost unnatural.
That was why he loved it.
Then the mail arrived.
One certified envelope.
From a law firm.
Elena opened it reluctantly.
Inside was notification that Isabella’s final charitable trust had matured.
Value:
$38 million.
Elena nearly dropped the paper.
“Absolutely not.”
Adrian smiled.
“You haven't read the rest.”
The trust could not be inherited personally.
It funded the foundation permanently.
Housing.
Legal defense.
Medical care.
Education.
Families escaping organized crime.
Elena sat.
“Sofia—I mean Isabella—planned all this?”
“Apparently.”
For years, Isabella had diverted her own legal investments into a separate fund.
No criminal money.
No family money.
Her money.
She had built an exit route for strangers.
That mattered to Elena more than any inheritance.
The foundation expanded nationwide over the next several years.
Elena became unexpectedly good at public speaking.
She hated that people noticed.
Miguel became operations director for secure relocation.
Dante supervised risk assessment.
Adrian stayed out of management.
Deliberately.
He funded.
Signed.
Listened.
Not controlled.
That was harder for him than fighting.
And probably healthier.
Adrian also began attending therapy.
He told nobody at first.
Anthony discovered the appointment card.
“Are you sick?”
Adrian hesitated.
“Kind of.”
“Your heart?”
“My head.”
Anthony looked alarmed.
Adrian corrected himself.
“My feelings.”
“Oh.”
Then:
“I have those too.”
“Unfortunately.”
Anthony smiled.
Fatherhood was becoming ordinary.
That was Adrian’s favorite miracle.
On Sophia’s birthday evening, after guests left, she sat on the porch beside Titan.
Adrian joined her.
“Good birthday?”
“Yes.”
“What was the best part?”
She thought.
“Dad came.”
Miguel had arrived late after helping relocate a threatened family.
Adrian nodded.
“That is a good part.”
“And Anthony didn't cheat at treasure hunt.”
Anthony shouted from inside:
“I DID NOT CHEAT LAST YEAR!”
Sophia grinned.
Then she became serious.
“Uncle Adrian?”
“Yes?”
“Were you scary before?”
He considered lying.
Didn't.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought if people feared me, nobody could hurt my family.”
Sophia scratched Titan’s ear.
“Did it work?”
“No.”
She nodded.
Children accepted truths adults resisted.
“Titan is scary.”
“Yes.”
“But he’s nice to us.”
“Yes.”
“So you can be both.”
Adrian smiled.
“I'm trying for less scary.”
“Good.”
She leaned against him.
For a moment, the man once feared across Boston sat quietly beside a seven-year-old holding a paper crown.
Then Titan suddenly rose.
His ears lifted.
Adrian tensed automatically.
A car stopped outside.
Dante appeared near the gate.
Then relaxed.
A woman stepped out.
About thirty.
Brown hair.
Nervous.
Holding an envelope.
She gave her name.
Anna Reynolds.
Dr. Reynolds’ daughter.
She had come because her father had died that morning in prison hospital custody after a stroke.
Before dying, he asked her to deliver one thing.
A sealed audio recorder.
“For Adrian Moretti.”
Adrian pressed play.
Reynolds’ voice said:
There is one truth Isabella made me swear not to tell until I knew Adrian had changed.
Adrian looked at Elena.
“Oh, for God's sake,” she whispered.
The recording continued.
Anthony was not the only embryo Isabella preserved.
Everyone froze.
Then Reynolds laughed weakly on the recording.
But relax.
There are no more hidden children.
Elena covered her face.
Adrian almost laughed.
The final truth was simpler.
Isabella had preserved one embryo because she hoped Adrian might someday want another chance at fatherhood.
Not secretly used.
Not implanted.
Still frozen under legal storage.
The decision now belonged to Adrian.
For the first time, a secret did not demand anything from him.
It only offered a choice.
He turned off the recorder.
Sophia asked:
“Are you having another kid?”
May you like
Adrian nearly choked.
Elena laughed until she cried.
