Chapter 10 - The Dog Who Remembered the Killer

Matteo chose an abandoned textile mill outside Lowell.

A building with too many entrances and too many blind corners.

Exactly the kind of place Adrian would once have entered with twenty armed men.

This time, he entered with six.

Federal agents waited farther out.

That part had taken argument.

Adrian Moretti had spent his life avoiding law enforcement.

Now Isabella’s archive gave him enough evidence to negotiate temporary cooperation.

One condition:

Anthony and Lucia came out alive.

Dante walked beside Titan.

The dog remained calm.

Until they reached the mill door.

Then he stopped.

Growled.

Dante looked down.

“Yeah.”

He knew.

Matteo was close.

Inside, Lucia sat tied to a chair.

Bruised.

Conscious.

Anthony stood beside her with one hand on her shoulder.

And across the room stood Dante.

Or a man who looked almost exactly like him.

Matteo Russo smiled.

“Brother.”

Dante stared.

Twelve years of grief compressed into one second.

“You're alive.”

“You sound disappointed.”

Titan’s growl deepened.

Matteo looked at the dog.

“Still remembers me.”

Adrian understood.

Titan had met Matteo before.

When?

The night Isabella died.

Matteo had been there.

“Who poisoned her?” Adrian asked.

Matteo shrugged.

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

“Vincent ordered it.”

“But you arranged it.”

Matteo smiled.

“Now you're learning.”

He had manipulated Vincent for years.

But Isabella became dangerous when she connected payments to witness deaths.

Matteo ordered Reynolds pressured.

Vincent delivered the toxin.

The fake crash followed.

Then Adrian became harder to control than expected.

Grief made him withdraw.

Matteo wanted him reckless.

Instead, Adrian became colder.

So Matteo changed strategy.

Anthony.

Succession.

Vincent’s ambition.

“Why poison me now?”

Matteo looked at Dante.

“Because I needed you to kill him.”

Dante's face remained blank.

“My death clears your identity.”

“Exactly.”

“And Adrian loses the only man who checks his worst instincts.”

Matteo laughed.

“Exactly.”

Sophia had ruined the plan by reaching Titan.

Because Adrian survived.

Because Titan moved.

Because Reynolds reached him in time.

A child Matteo had never considered changed the entire sequence.

“Where is Miguel?” Matteo asked.

“Safe.”

“Pity.”

Then Anthony did something nobody expected.

He kicked Matteo in the shin.

Hard.

Matteo cursed.

Titan lunged.

Not at his throat.

At the gun.

The weapon flew.

Dante moved.

Federal teams entered.

The confrontation ended in seconds.

No heroic gunfight.

No bloodbath.

Just Matteo on the floor, Titan standing over him.

For twelve years, Matteo had believed violence defined power.

In the end, a child and a dog took away his control.

Lucia embraced Adrian.

Then Anthony stood before his father.

Neither knew what to do.

Adrian knelt.

“Hi.”

Anthony smiled nervously.

“Hi.”

“I've wanted to meet you for about…”

Adrian swallowed.

“…six hours.”

Anthony laughed.

Then hugged him.

Adrian held on.

Too tightly.

Exactly like a father who had missed seven years.

But the story wasn't over.

Matteo started laughing from the floor.

“You think you won?”

Adrian looked at him.

“You’re in handcuffs.”

“Vincent still controls the family board.”

“Not for long.”

Matteo smiled.

“You haven't opened Isabella’s final file.”

Adrian froze.

“What file?”

“The one she hid where only her sister would find it.”

He looked at Elena.

“Ask her what Teresa left behind.”

Elena’s mother.

Dead for thirteen years.

Elena suddenly remembered an old sewing box she had never opened because the key was missing.

The brass key from Isabella’s envelope.

Back at Elena’s apartment, it fit.

Inside the sewing box were letters.

Birth records.

And a photograph.

Teresa Castillo standing beside Adrian’s father, Lorenzo Moretti.

Far too close.

On the back:

Summer 1988.

Elena stared.

Then she found the letter.

Teresa had written:

Elena deserves to know who her father was.

The name underneath was Lorenzo Moretti.

Adrian’s father.

Elena looked up in horror.

May you like

If the letter was true, Adrian Moretti wasn't only Isabella’s husband.

He was Elena’s half brother.
