Chapter 13 - THE PRICE OF LOVING THE WRONG WOMAN

Matteo Rossi had spent his entire adult life protecting the family empire.

Now his father was asking him to dismantle the very power that had defined him.

And the woman he loved was standing beside him, waiting to see who he truly was.

"What exactly did you build?" Matteo asked Lorenzo.

His father lowered his eyes.

"The legitimate businesses were real. But some of our former associates used the organization for extortion, fraud, and illegal financial transactions."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"I know what kind of business we've been involved in."

"Not all of it."

Lorenzo handed him a folder.

Inside were financial records connecting several Rossi-controlled companies to Richard Vale's medical fraud operation.

Matteo examined them.

Some transactions had occurred before he took control.

Others had continued afterward, hidden through subsidiaries and false invoices.

His expression darkened.

"Who authorized these?"

Lorenzo hesitated.

"Alessandro. And several executives you trusted."

Matteo closed the folder.

For years, he had believed that protecting his family justified intimidation, secrecy, and questionable alliances.

Now he understood how that thinking had allowed corruption to survive.

Isabella touched his hand.

"What are you going to do?"

Matteo looked at her.

"What would you do?"

She considered the question.

Then answered honestly.

"I'd tell the truth."

He smiled sadly.

"Even if it cost everything?"

"Especially then."

Matteo nodded.

That afternoon, he met with federal investigators and independent attorneys.

He turned over the remaining company records.

He disclosed his own involvement in illegal activities.

And he agreed to cooperate with the investigation under the advice of counsel.

The consequences were serious.

Some assets were frozen.

Several companies entered court-supervised restructuring.

Matteo faced legal scrutiny and the possibility of criminal penalties.

For the first time, he couldn't solve a problem by making a phone call.

But he didn't retreat.

Gabriel also provided testimony.

His sister, Elena Torres, had been located alive at the Milwaukee facility and was receiving medical care.

Sophia Moretti gave investigators the records she had collected during her marriage.

Nicholas Vale, who had allowed his father to use the wedding estate as a trap, cooperated after his arrest.

Richard Vale attempted to escape through private aviation.

Authorities stopped him before his aircraft departed.

The conspiracy finally began collapsing.

Three weeks later, Isabella returned to the small apartment where she'd lived for years.

She sat on her worn sofa, staring at the evening skyline.

Matteo arrived carrying takeout.

"No private chef?" she teased.

"I thought we could eat something normal."

She laughed.

"You're learning."

They ate Chinese food from cardboard containers.

For a while, neither discussed the investigation.

Then Matteo put down his fork.

"Isabella."

She looked at him.

"I need to tell you something."

Her smile faded.

"What?"

He took her hand.

"I love you."

She stopped breathing.

Matteo continued.

"I don't know what my future looks like. There may be hearings, penalties, and things I can't undo."

His voice softened.

"But I know I don't want to keep living the way I did before I met you."

Isabella's eyes filled with tears.

"I love you too."

He kissed her gently.

Then he pulled back.

"There's one more thing."

She frowned.

"What?"

Matteo reached into his coat.

He placed a legal document on the table.

Isabella read it.

Her eyes widened.

He had transferred a substantial part of his legitimately acquired personal wealth into an independent charitable trust.

And he wanted her to serve as one of its trustees.

She stared at him.

"Why me?"

"Because you're the only person who ever warned me about betrayal without asking what you would get in return."

May you like

Then he added something that made her heart stop.

"And because tomorrow, I'm going to publicly resign from the Rossi organization."
