Chapter 11 - THE WAITRESS WHO OWNED A SECRET EMPIRE

Isabella stared at the federal investigator's report.

Her name appeared on the ownership documents.

Not as an employee.

Not as a witness.

As the controlling beneficiary of an entire medical research company.

"This is impossible," she whispered.

Matteo examined the papers.

"These signatures aren't yours."

"Then why is my name here?"

The investigator explained that the company had been transferred into a trust established by Daniel Bennett years earlier.

The trust was intended to safeguard evidence and recover assets for people harmed by the research scheme.

But Richard Vale had secretly seized operational control.

Isabella had never been informed.

Her identity had been used to obscure the real ownership.

Matteo looked at her.

"Your father may have been trying to protect the company from Vale."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because knowing might have made you a target."

Isabella laughed bitterly.

"I became a target anyway."

Matteo couldn't argue.

Within hours, federal agents obtained search warrants for the Milwaukee facility.

Medical authorities and emergency responders joined the operation.

The investigators found falsified records, unlawful detention arrangements, and evidence of financial coercion.

Several staff members cooperated immediately.

Others attempted to destroy documents.

But the original archive preserved by Daniel Bennett contained enough information to reconstruct much of the fraud.

At 4:17 in the morning, Matteo received a call.

"They're alive."

His entire body went still.

"Lorenzo Rossi and Daniel Bennett are both alive."

Matteo closed his eyes.

For the first time in eleven years, hope felt real.

Isabella covered her mouth.

"My dad?"

"He's receiving medical treatment. He's stable."

She began crying.

Matteo pulled her into his arms.

Neither spoke.

They simply held each other.

For a moment, the ballroom betrayal, the criminal conspiracy, and the dangerous families surrounding them disappeared.

There were only two children who had spent years missing their fathers.

And the possibility of finally seeing them again.

Later that morning, investigators brought both men to a secure hospital.

Lorenzo Rossi was sixty-nine.

His hair had turned completely silver.

He was thinner than Matteo remembered.

But when Matteo entered the room, his father lifted his head.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Lorenzo whispered:

"Matteo?"

Matteo crossed the room.

"Dad."

The word broke in his throat.

Lorenzo reached for him.

Matteo fell into his father's arms.

And the man feared by half of Chicago cried like the boy who had lost his father eleven years earlier.

Across the hall, Isabella stood before another hospital room.

Her hand trembled on the door handle.

Inside sat Daniel Bennett.

Alive.

Older.

But unmistakably her father.

He looked up.

"Isabella?"

Her knees nearly gave way.

"Daddy?"

Daniel covered his face.

"Oh, sweetheart."

She ran toward him.

For the first time in eleven years, Isabella held her father.

And for several minutes, neither could speak.

Then Daniel whispered something that changed everything.

"There's one more person you need to meet."

Isabella pulled back.

"Who?"

Daniel looked toward the doorway.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Thin.

With familiar blue eyes.

Isabella stopped breathing.

May you like

Because the woman looked exactly like her mother.

Her mother who had supposedly died three years earlier.
