Chapter 12 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Isabella couldn't move.
The woman standing in the hospital doorway had her mother's eyes.
Her mother's smile.
Even the small scar near her eyebrow from a childhood accident.
"Mom?"
The word escaped before Isabella could stop it.
The woman began crying.
"Oh, Bella."
Isabella stepped backward.
"No."
The woman reached toward her.
"Sweetheart—"
"No!"
Daniel slowly stood.
"Isabella, please listen."
She turned toward him.
"You told me she died!"
Tears streamed down her face.
"I buried her! I paid for the funeral! I spent three years wishing I could hear her voice again!"
Daniel looked devastated.
"I know."
The woman lowered herself into a chair.
"My name is Catherine Bennett," she whispered.
Isabella stared.
"You're my mother."
Catherine nodded.
"But how?"
Daniel explained.
Three years earlier, Catherine had discovered someone was monitoring Isabella.
Richard Vale's people had begun searching for the pendant Daniel had given their daughter.
Catherine contacted a former federal investigator who had once assisted Daniel.
Together, they arranged for Isabella to believe Catherine had died so the people watching her would stop targeting the family connection.
It had been a desperate, deeply damaging decision.
And Isabella had never consented to it.
"You let me grieve you," Isabella whispered.
Catherine covered her mouth.
"I know, sweetheart. I thought I was protecting you."
"You should have trusted me."
Her mother began sobbing.
"You're right."
For the first time, there was no excuse.
No claim that love made every decision acceptable.
Only regret.
Isabella turned away.
"I need time."
Catherine nodded.
"Take all the time you need."
Outside the room, Matteo waited.
He saw Isabella's face and immediately approached.
"What happened?"
She tried to speak.
But the words wouldn't come.
Matteo gently opened his arms.
She stepped into them.
And cried.
He didn't tell her everything would be okay.
He didn't demand forgiveness.
He simply held her.
After a while, Isabella whispered:
"Everyone keeps saying they lied because they loved me."
Matteo looked at her.
"Love shouldn't require taking away someone's right to know their own life."
She lifted her head.
"You really believe that?"
"Yes."
Something softened between them.
Then Lorenzo Rossi appeared at the end of the hallway, supported by a nurse.
"Matteo."
His son turned.
Lorenzo looked toward Isabella.
"There's something I need to confess."
Matteo stiffened.
"What?"
Lorenzo took a breath.
"Richard Vale didn't choose Isabella by accident."
Isabella stared.
"Why?"
Lorenzo looked ashamed.
"Because Daniel Bennett placed the final evidence under a legal protection that only she could authorize."
Matteo frowned.
"What evidence?"
Lorenzo's voice dropped.
"Enough to expose the people who helped Richard Vale. Including people inside our own criminal organization."
A long silence followed.
Then Lorenzo looked directly at his son.
"Matteo, the Rossi empire isn't what you think it is."
May you like
He swallowed.
"And if you want a future with Isabella, you must decide whether you're willing to lose everything you inherited."
