Chapter 7 - THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Nobody moved.
My father stood beneath the chandelier.
Older than the man in my memories.
Thinner.
But alive.
I couldn't speak.
He looked at me.
“Elena.”
That single word broke something inside me.
I ran to him.
He caught me in his arms.
For several seconds, I was no longer a grown woman.
I was the daughter who had spent eleven years believing her father was gone.
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I failed to protect you once.”
He looked at Dominic.
“And I refused to make that mistake twice.”
Dominic stepped closer.
“My father?”
“He survived too.”
Dominic stared at him.
“Where?”
My father looked toward the entrance.
“Not far.”
Another man entered.
Marcus Vale.
Dominic's father.
The two men stood facing each other.
Neither spoke.
Then Marcus looked at his son.
“I am sorry.”
Dominic's face was unreadable.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You could have told me.”
“They were watching you.”
“Who?”
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Daniel stepped backward.
“Don't.”
My father spoke.
“Monarch was never a company.”
I looked at him.
“It was a network.”
Marcus continued.
“Families, executives, attorneys, politicians. They manipulated businesses and eliminated anyone who threatened them.”
My father nodded.
“Your grandfather discovered it.”
“And then Dad?”
“They targeted him.”
My mother stepped forward.
“I helped them.”
I stared at her.
She began crying.
“Not willingly.”
She explained everything.
After my father's first attempted murder, she had been threatened.
They told her they would kill me if she went to the police.
So she cooperated.
She signed documents.
She hid evidence.
She allowed Daniel to take control.
But secretly, she preserved copies of everything.
The box.
The ledger.
The trust.
She had been waiting for the right moment.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why did you join them?”
He stared at me.
“Because I was afraid.”
“You betrayed Dad.”
“I was twenty-three.”
“You stole from me.”
“I thought I was protecting the family.”
“By destroying it?”
His eyes filled with tears.
Then he admitted the final truth.
“I wasn't the mastermind.”
Everyone went silent.
“Who was?”
Daniel looked toward the kitchen.
“Preston's father.”
I felt a chill.
“But he's dead.”
Daniel nodded.
“His son took over.”
Dominic's expression hardened.
“Preston.”
“Yes.”
The restaurant doors slammed shut.
Preston stepped inside.
Six armed men surrounded him.
But he wasn't smiling.
He looked terrified.
Because behind him stood federal agents.
One of them announced:
“Preston Hale, you're under arrest.”
Preston turned pale.
Then the lead agent looked at me.
“Ms. Hayes, we need your cooperation.”
“For what?”
He handed me a document.
“Your father's evidence has been corroborated.”
I looked down.
The case involved fraud, conspiracy, extortion, and multiple attempted murders.
But there was one final page.
A list of protected witnesses.
At the bottom was one name.
Elena Hayes.
Then another.
Dominic Vale.
I looked at my husband.
May you like
He smiled faintly.
“For once,” he whispered, “we're on the same side of the table.”
