Chapter 1 - THE QUESTION THAT SILENCED THE ROOM

“Who did this?”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

That was what frightened everyone.

He didn’t shout. He didn’t threaten anyone. He simply stood in front of me, one hand still resting gently against the side of my shaved head, his eyes fixed on the men surrounding table twelve.

Preston Hale swallowed.

“It was a joke.”

Dominic slowly turned toward him.

“A joke?”

Preston forced a laugh.

“Come on, man. She’s a waitress. We were celebrating.”

Frank Delaney immediately stepped between them.

“Mr. Vale, I can explain.”

Dominic looked at him.

“No.”

One word.

Frank stopped speaking.

Dominic pointed toward the electric clippers.

“Who held those?”

The man holding them dropped them onto the table.

“I did.”

“Name.”

“Grant.”

Dominic nodded once.

“And who held her?”

Two other men looked at each other.

Neither answered.

I finally spoke.

“Dominic.”

He turned toward me immediately.

“You don't have to do anything.”

His expression softened.

“I know.”

That answer surprised me.

Then he looked around the room.

“But I am going to do something.”

He removed his coat and placed it around my shoulders.

The restaurant remained silent.

Dominic looked at Frank.

“Call the police.”

Preston laughed nervously.

“You're calling the cops over a haircut?”

Dominic didn't even look at him.

“Yes.”

Preston's smile disappeared.

“You don't understand who my father is.”

Dominic finally turned.

“I know exactly who your father is.”

The words landed like a warning.

Preston's face changed.

Everyone in Chicago knew the Hale family.

Old money.

Real estate.

Political connections.

Private clubs.

For years, they had been considered untouchable.

But Dominic knew something most people didn't.

He knew exactly where their money came from.

And apparently, so did Frank.

Because Frank suddenly whispered, “Dominic, we need to talk privately.”

“No.”

Dominic looked toward the restaurant manager.

“Bring me every security recording from tonight.”

The manager hesitated.

Preston stepped forward.

“You can't just walk in here and—”

Dominic raised one hand.

Preston stopped.

Not because Dominic had threatened him.

Because every person in that room suddenly remembered who Dominic Vale really was.

Then Dominic looked at me.

“Did anyone else touch you?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Did anyone help?”

I looked toward my manager.

He lowered his eyes.

“No.”

Dominic nodded.

“Good.”

I frowned.

“Good?”

He looked at me.

“Now we know exactly who needs to answer for it.”

A police siren sounded outside.

Preston's friends began whispering.

Then Frank returned carrying a tablet.

“There's something you need to see.”

He handed it to Dominic.

The screen showed the dining room at 9:31.

But Dominic didn't watch the assault.

He watched the entrance.

A man in a gray suit had entered the restaurant twenty-six minutes before the incident.

He had spoken briefly with Preston.

Then he had handed him a small envelope.

Dominic paused the footage.

His eyes narrowed.

“That man.”

Frank nodded.

“We don't know who he is.”

Dominic stared at the screen.

“I do.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who?”

Dominic looked at me.

“Someone who was never supposed to know you work here.”

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His assistant spoke rapidly.

Dominic's face hardened.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Say that again.”

He listened.

His eyes slowly moved toward me.

“Someone broke into our house.”

My heart stopped.

“What did they take?”

Dominic ended the call.

“Nothing.”

He looked toward Preston.

“They were searching for something.”

Then he looked back at me.

“And I think I know what.”

My blood ran cold.

Because there was only one thing in our house that almost nobody knew existed.

A sealed box containing documents my father had left me before he died.

And suddenly, I understood.

Tonight hadn't been about humiliating a waitress.

Someone had used Preston Hale to create a distraction.

They weren't trying to hurt me.

They were trying to find what I had hidden.

And whoever was behind it had just made one enormous mistake.

May you like

They had forced Dominic to stop protecting my secret.

Now he was going to uncover it.
