Chapter 5 - THE NAME ON THE ORIGINAL TRUST

We returned to the city under heavy security.

For the first time since I married Dominic, I understood what his world really looked like.

The men who protected him weren't simply guards.

They were investigators, former federal agents, attorneys, accountants, and people who knew how to make problems disappear legally.

Dominic gathered them around a conference table.

I placed the ledger in front of them.

“No retaliation,” I said.

Everyone looked at Dominic.

He nodded.

“My wife is in charge.”

That sentence changed the room.

We spent six hours tracing the accounts.

The money led from Daniel to shell companies.

From shell companies to political donors.

From donors to property acquisitions.

Then we found something impossible.

A payment had been made every month for eleven years.

The recipient:

Elena Hayes Trust Administration.

I stared at the screen.

“I've never received these payments.”

“You weren't supposed to,” the accountant said.

“Who controlled the account?”

He enlarged the records.

My mother's name appeared.

I looked at her.

She wasn't there.

She had stayed at home under security.

“This account was opened using my identity.”

Dominic frowned.

“Who had access to your mother's documents?”

I suddenly remembered.

“Daniel.”

The room went quiet.

My brother hadn't simply stolen from the company.

He had been impersonating me.

But then the accountant found something worse.

The account was connected to an offshore trust.

The beneficiary was listed as:

Robert Hayes.

My supposedly dead uncle.

Dominic leaned forward.

“Find him.”

Two hours later, we had an address.

A private estate in Wisconsin.

We drove there before sunrise.

Robert opened the door himself.

He looked older.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

But unmistakably alive.

He stared at me.

“Elena.”

I stepped forward.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You could have called.”

“I did.”

“When?”

“The night your father died.”

I froze.

“What did you say?”

“I told him Daniel was working with Monarch.”

“And then?”

“Your father told me to disappear.”

“Why?”

Robert looked at Dominic.

“Because your husband's father was involved.”

Dominic stiffened.

“My father?”

Robert nodded.

“But Marcus tried to leave.”

“Like my father.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Robert's eyes filled with regret.

“They were both preparing to expose Monarch.”

I felt the room tilt.

“Then who killed them?”

Robert didn't answer.

He walked to a safe.

Inside was a yellow envelope.

He handed it to me.

“Your father left this for you.”

I opened it.

Inside was the original trust.

My name appeared as the sole controlling beneficiary.

But beneath it was another document.

A handwritten amendment.

My father had added one condition.

If anyone attempted to steal or manipulate the trust, control would automatically transfer to a designated protector.

I read the name.

Dominic Vale.

I looked at my husband.

He stared at the document in disbelief.

“My father appointed you?”

“No,” Robert said.

“Your father appointed you because he trusted Marcus. He believed Marcus would protect Elena.”

Dominic's voice was quiet.

“My father never told me.”

“He never had the chance.”

Then Robert handed me a final photograph.

It showed my father, Marcus Vale, and one other person.

My mother.

But the date was after the night Marcus supposedly died.

I looked at her.

“What is this?”

Robert sighed.

“Your mother knows more than she's told you.”

I felt betrayed all over again.

“Mom said she was protecting me.”

“She was.”

“From what?”

Robert looked toward the window.

“From the truth about who ordered the first attack.”

Before he could continue, his phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“She's gone.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

My blood ran cold.

Robert looked at me.

“And whoever took her left a message.”

He placed the phone on the table.

May you like

The message contained six words:

Bring Elena to the Monarch Room tonight.
