Chapter 7 - The Birthday Party from Hell

We reached Laya's estate at 8:40 a.m., after spending most of the night gathering documents and avoiding the men watching the main roads.

The party was over.

Luxury cars lined the driveway, and broken champagne glasses glittered across the front steps. Security guards stood near the entrance, refusing to answer Daniel's questions.

Then we heard a scream from inside.

I ran.

Daniel followed, shouting for me to wait, but I was already crossing the foyer.

Roman stood in the ballroom with a pistol in his hand. His black coat was soaked, his face pale with exhaustion.

Laya sat on the floor beside a shattered table.

A baby carrier stood near the fireplace.

Roman turned when he saw me.

For one brief moment, relief crossed his face.

Then he noticed Sophie in my arms.

His expression hardened.

"Aaron. Give me the baby."

I stepped backward.

"No."

"She's in danger."

"From you?"

He looked as though I'd struck him.

Laya laughed from the floor.

"Tell her, Roman. Tell your wife why you came here."

Roman pointed his gun toward the ceiling.

"Be quiet."

"No. You've spent three years pretending Nicholas never existed. Now you want to save your precious daughter and erase my son all over again."

I stared at the carrier.

Inside lay a baby boy, awake and crying.

Roman lowered his weapon.

"I came here to find out who falsified the DNA report."

Laya's smile vanished.

Daniel moved toward the carrier, checking the infant's breathing and warmth.

"Where's the doctor?" he demanded.

"Gone," Laya replied. "She left when Roman arrived."

Roman turned toward me.

"I didn't order anyone to hurt Sophie."

"Your guard broke into my nursery."

His face went white.

"Victor?"

I nodded.

Roman looked toward his men.

"Find him. Alive."

Laya suddenly stood and reached inside her purse.

Daniel shouted a warning.

A gunshot rang out.

Roman shoved me behind a pillar as glass exploded across the ballroom. His security team tackled Laya to the floor, but she laughed even as they restrained her.

"You still don't understand, Roman!"

She struggled against the guards.

"Your father arranged everything. The baby, the succession clause, the fake DNA test. I was supposed to give you an heir, and Aaron was supposed to give you a daughter you could never trust."

Roman stared at her.

"My father is dead."

Laya smiled through her tears.

"Then explain why he called me last night."

She pulled a small phone from her sleeve.

The screen displayed an incoming call.

The contact name was simple.

DAD.
