Chapter 14 - The Last Moretti

Michael Moretti arrived at the lake house at 7:30 p.m., walking through the front door as though he had never been missing.

He looked older than the brother in Roman's photographs, but his smile was the same. Confident. Charming. Completely devoid of shame.

Roman stood in the living room with a gun pointed at the floor.

"You were dead."

Michael shrugged.

"That was the point."

"You let me bury an empty coffin."

"Our father needed you to inherit the organization. A grieving son makes a useful leader."

Roman's jaw tightened.

"And Nicholas?"

Michael glanced toward the nursery.

"My son."

"You used your own child to destroy my family."

"I used the only heir our father would accept."

I stepped forward.

"Your father tried to have my daughter taken."

Michael looked at me with mild irritation.

"Your daughter was never supposed to be harmed. We only needed to remove her temporarily, establish the succession claim, and force Roman to sign over control."

"Victor broke into my nursery with a gun."

"Victor was supposed to frighten you. He wasn't supposed to lose control."

I felt sick.

To these men, my daughter was a clause in a contract. A problem to be moved, hidden, or erased whenever it threatened their power.

Rebecca's team had already secured the house, and federal agents were closing in. Michael knew he had minutes left.

He reached into his coat.

Roman raised his gun.

Michael slowly withdrew a folded document.

"The original succession agreement," he said. "The one that proves Dad's entire plan was illegal."

He placed it on the table.

Then he looked at Roman.

"Help me disappear, and I'll give you everything."

Roman stared at the document.

For years, his father had taught him that loyalty meant obedience and that family mattered more than truth. Michael was offering him the final chance to preserve the old world.

Instead, Roman stepped away from the table.

"No."

Michael's smile disappeared.

"You'd betray your own brother?"

"You betrayed my daughter."

Michael lunged toward the document, but Rebecca's agents entered the room and restrained him. Outside, sirens echoed across the lake.

Antonio and Laya were already in custody. Michael was arrested for conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, and his role in the attempted removal of Sophie.

For the first time, Roman's family name could no longer protect the people who had abused it.

But as the agents escorted Michael outside, he turned toward me.

"Ask Roman what he promised Isabella."

I looked at my husband.

Michael smiled.

"He didn't just agree to give up custody of Sophie. He agreed to marry Isabella again if she helped him destroy our father."

Roman's face went pale.

I felt my heart break all over again.

"Is that true?"

Roman didn't answer immediately.

Then he whispered, "Yes."

He looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"But I never intended to go through with it."

I stepped away.

"Intentions don't erase betrayal, Roman."

And for the first time, he had no defense.
