Chapter 1 - The Voicemail That Changed Everything

At 10:19 p.m., the unknown caller left me a message that made me question whether my husband's betrayal was the most dangerous secret in our marriage.
I played it twice.
The first time, I heard a woman crying.
The second time, I heard my daughter's name.
"Aaron, if you love Sophie, don't let Roman bring her to Laya's house. Whatever happens tonight, don't trust the man who says he's protecting your family."
The message ended with a sharp gasp and the sound of something heavy hitting the floor.
Then silence.
I stood in my kitchen, six days after giving birth, with a bottle in one hand and my phone in the other. Outside, Milwaukee disappeared beneath a cold November rain. Upstairs, Sophie slept in her nursery, unaware that the world she'd entered might already be closing around her.
I called the number back.
Disconnected.
I checked the voicemail details. The call had come from a prepaid phone purchased less than an hour earlier.
Then another message arrived.
A photograph.
Roman stood beside Laya Crane in front of a black SUV. Her hand rested on his chest, and his wedding ring was conspicuously absent.
That wasn't what frightened me.
Behind them stood a man I recognized from Roman's private security team, a man who had visited our house the morning Sophie was born.
He was holding a baby carrier.
My baby carrier.
I ran upstairs so quickly that pain tore through my recovering body. Sophie was sleeping peacefully, her tiny fingers curled beside her cheek.
I checked the nursery window, the closet, and the hallway.
Everything looked normal.
Then I noticed the small white envelope tucked beneath the rocking chair.
Inside was a hospital bracelet bearing my daughter's name.

And beneath it, someone had written six words.
