Chapter 7 - THE LEDGER IN UNIT 314

Storage unit 314 contained no money.

No guns.

No dramatic pile of secrets.

Just three metal filing boxes.

That frightened Dante more.

Paper lasts.

Paper remembers.

Marco’s original ledger documented six years of illicit shipments.

Container numbers.

Port employees.

Payoffs.

Shell companies.

Victims moved through freight corridors.

Khloe had to stop reading after three pages.

Dante did not.

His face became colder with every line.

Then one name appeared repeatedly.

JARED COLE.

So now we have Jared surname Cole; okay.

Role:

Access systems.

Vehicle rotation.

Camera interruption.

Payments:

Large.

Then another column:

RECRUITMENT FAILURE - K.B.

Khloe froze.

“My initials.”

Dante looked.

Yes.

K.B.

Date:

Two years earlier.

Exactly when she met Jared.

Her stomach turned.

“What does recruitment failure mean?”

Pietro was not there.

But another file explained.

Salvatore’s network sometimes used women with legitimate employment to create cover companies, rental agreements, travel bookings, and clean addresses.

Jared had been instructed to recruit Khloe.

Why her?

Stable credit.

No criminal record.

Office administrator at a logistics-adjacent firm.

Easy access to corporate mailrooms.

She had thought Jared loved her.

He had selected her.

Khloe sat on the concrete floor.

Dante crouched.

Not touching.

Good.

“I was a job.”

“No.”

She laughed.

“Your ledger literally says recruitment.”

“You were a target.”

“Much better.”

“No.”

Dante’s voice hardened.

“Do not let their reason for approaching you become the definition of what you were.”

She looked at him.

That was unexpectedly kind.

Then another entry.

K.B. RESISTANT. J.C. REQUESTS MORE TIME.

Later:

J.C. PERSONAL ATTACHMENT INTERFERING.

Jared had deviated.

Maybe possessiveness.

Maybe something that resembled affection.

Not enough.

Then:

K.B. UNSUITABLE. DO NOT USE.

And after that:

J.C. DISCIPLINARY DEBT $75K.

Khloe whispered:

“They punished him because I didn’t cooperate.”

Probably.

Then Dante found the crucial entry.

Six months before Marco died:

JARED REPORTS MV SUSPECTS S.V.

Marco suspected Salvatore.

Three days later:

E.M. MOVES COPY.

Elias moved a copy of the ledger.

Then:

MV REMOVED.

No euphemism needed.

Marco was killed.

Khloe looked at Dante.

He had stopped breathing normally.

She said:

“Sit.”

“I’m fine.”

“No.”

For once, Dante obeyed.

Then Paulie found another file.

Not ledger.

A will.

Marco’s handwriting.

Not legal.

Personal note.

Dante opened it.

If I’m dead, don’t burn the city down.

Khloe almost smiled.

Marco knew his brother too.

Then:

Salvatore will expect rage. Rage makes you predictable.

Find Elias.

Trust Paulie.

Don’t trust blood just because it shares your name.

Dante closed his eyes.

Then the final line:

And if Dad is still alive, tell him he was a coward.

Pietro would love that.

Then a phone vibrated.

Not theirs.

Inside one of the metal boxes.

A burner.

Screen lit.

Incoming call.

SALVATORE.

Dante looked at Khloe.

Then answered.

“Uncle.”

Silence.

Then Salvatore laughed.

“Marco always did enjoy scavenger hunts.”

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“Where are you?”

“Close enough.”

“What do you want?”

“Pietro.”

Dante said nothing.

Salvatore continued:

“And the girl.”

Khloe’s blood turned cold.

“Why her?”

“Because Jared failed to understand one simple rule.”

“What?”

May you like

“Loose ends become witnesses.”

Then the storage facility lights went out.
