Chapter 12 - THE MAN IN THE CHARITY PHOTOS

Victor Hale smiled beside mayors.

Governors.

Hospital boards.

Children’s charities.

Nobody photographed him beside shipping manifests.

The partnership agreement tied him to Salvatore twelve years earlier.

Could be outdated.

Could be limited.

Could be misunderstood.

So Dante did not move.

Khloe noticed.

“You’re learning.”

He glared.

“Don’t sound surprised.”

Then Elias delivered Salvatore’s master ledger through attorneys.

Victor Hale appeared everywhere.

Not directly.

Initials.

Subsidiaries.

Security contracts.

Warehouses.

The network had embedded itself inside legitimate logistics.

Hale provided clean infrastructure.

Salvatore provided intimidation.

Together, they moved people through gaps in inspection.

Khloe felt sick.

Federal investigators became fully involved.

Dante’s lawyers negotiated scope.

He would provide records.

In return, nothing magical.

No blanket immunity.

No clean slate.

Just cooperation considered appropriately.

Dante accepted.

That mattered.

Then one of his captains refused.

Russo.

The man who said Marco would have gone into Pier Nine.

Russo disappeared.

Hours later, Victor Hale’s private plane filed for departure to Mexico.

Passenger list:

Victor Hale.

Salvatore Varga.

Russo.

Three men.

One exit.

Authorities moved.

Plane grounded before takeoff.

But Salvatore was not onboard.

Neither was Russo.

Only Hale.

The passenger manifest was false.

Decoy.

Then Dante received a photograph.

Khloe.

Leaving her attorney’s office.

Taken that morning.

Message:

BRING PIETRO TO TACOMA.

Salvatore.

Again.

Leverage.

Dante showed her.

He did not hide it.

Good.

Khloe said:

“No.”

“I know.”

“No, I mean I’m done being moved around like something fragile.”

“You are a target.”

“I have been a target for years.”

“That is not an argument for less security.”

Fair.

Then she said:

“I want to help.”

“No.”

She stared.

He stopped.

“Explain.”

Progress.

Khloe knew Jared.

His habits.

His old locations.

Salvatore had used Jared for years.

Maybe Jared knew Tacoma properties.

They asked through counsel.

Jared gave three addresses.

One was an abandoned marine supply warehouse.

Pietro recognized it.

Salvatore used it decades earlier.

Police watched it.

Nothing.

Then Khloe remembered something Jared once said when drunk:

“Old men hide where they buried their first money.”

What did that mean?

She told Dante.

Pietro knew.

An old Varga-owned cannery north of Tacoma.

Sold publicly twenty years ago.

Secret land trust retained an adjacent caretaker house.

Authorities checked.

Heat signature.

Vehicle.

Movement.

Salvatore was there.

So was Russo.

Police prepared an operation.

Dante hated being excluded.

Khloe said:

“Good.”

He looked at her.

“You’re enjoying this.”

“A little.”

Then he asked:

“What if they escape?”

“Then professionals keep looking.”

“You really believe that?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“But I believe you going in with six armed men creates worse odds.”

He sighed.

Then sirens moved in the distance.

Hours later, call.

Salvatore arrested.

Russo arrested.

No shootout.

No bodies.

Dante sat silently.

Khloe expected satisfaction.

Instead, he looked empty.

“That’s it?” she asked.

“No.”

“What?”

“My whole life I thought when I found who killed Marco, I would feel something.”

“And?”

“I feel tired.”

She understood.

Revenge stories promise fire.

Real endings often feel like exhaustion.

Then Paulie entered.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“They found something at the cannery.”

A locked room.

Inside:

Marco’s watch.

Old photos.

Documents.

And a child’s drawing.

Dante stared.

“Whose?”

Paulie looked at Khloe.

“Jared’s daughter.”

May you like

Khloe froze.

Jared had told her he had no children.
