Chapter 11 - WHAT KHLOE’S MOTHER HID

Khloe’s mother, Mary Bennett, had worked nights at St. Anne’s Medical Center.

Billing clerk.

Not nurse.

Not doctor.

But hospitals run on people who know which doors open after midnight.

Nine years earlier, Pietro Varga arrived under a false name after surviving an attack.

He needed to disappear before Salvatore found him.

Mary helped.

Why?

Money?

No.

Pietro explained later.

Mary’s brother had once worked at Varga docks.

Died in an accident caused by Salvatore’s negligence.

Pietro had quietly compensated the family.

Mary did not like him.

But she believed Salvatore was worse.

So when Pietro needed an unlogged transfer from one ward to another, she used administrative access to change a room number and delay billing entry.

Small action.

Huge consequence.

Salvatore later suspected someone at St. Anne’s helped.

Never proved who.

Then Jared began dating Khloe years later.

Salvatore recognized the surname.

Bennett.

He investigated.

Found Mary.

Found Khloe.

Suddenly Khloe was not just convenient.

She was connected to an old secret.

“Did Jared know from the beginning?” Khloe asked.

Pietro shook his head.

“Not at first.”

“When?”

“After Salvatore ran your background.”

“How long?”

“Six months into your relationship.”

Khloe felt sick.

“And Jared stayed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Pietro looked at her.

“Because he had become attached.”

She laughed bitterly.

“He broke my wrist.”

No attachment excused that.

Pietro nodded.

“I did not say love made him good.”

Good.

Then Mary’s old storage box was found in Khloe’s apartment building basement.

She had never opened it after her mother’s death.

Inside:

Tax documents.

Photographs.

A hospital ID.

And one envelope:

FOR KHLOE IF JARED EVER ASKS ABOUT VARGA.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

Mary’s handwriting.

Sweetheart,

If you are reading this, I failed to keep an old mistake from reaching you.

Not mistake.

Choice.

Mary explained Pietro.

Salvatore.

The dock accident that killed her brother.

Then:

I helped Pietro because I believed one frightened man deserved one chance to get away from his brother’s war. I did not know whether he was good. I knew only that Salvatore was dangerous.

Khloe read through tears.

Then:

Never let a man tell you fear is proof of love.

She stopped.

Jared.

Two years.

Mary had written the warning before Khloe met him.

Then:

If anyone with the Varga name asks you to trust them, make them earn it in daylight.

Khloe looked at Dante.

He had read nothing.

Good.

She folded the letter.

“What does it say?” he asked.

“That you don’t get to know yet.”

He nodded.

Correct answer.

Then at the bottom:

There is a key in my old sewing box. It belongs to a safety deposit box opened with Pietro.

They found the key.

The bank confirmed the box still existed.

Khloe accessed it with her attorney.

Inside:

Copies of documents Pietro left with Mary as insurance.

One document mattered.

Salvatore had signed a private partnership agreement with an American logistics executive.

Name:

Victor Hale.

Khloe knew him.

Everyone in Seattle business did.

Chairman of Hale Maritime.

Public philanthropist.

Major political donor.

More legitimate and more powerful than Dante.

If the document was real, Salvatore’s network did not survive because of mafia secrecy.

May you like

It survived because respectable businesses helped it.

And Victor Hale’s company currently controlled security contracts for half the Port of Seattle.
