Chapter 9 - THE VAULT BENEATH THE RESTAURANT

The Maragold Room was built over an old private bank.

That was the last place Lily expected the story to go.

But beneath the wine cellar sat a sealed vault dating back nearly seventy years.

Sarah’s father had used one compartment to hide original property records after discovering Marco was forging dock transfers.

The brass key opened box 214.

Federal agents supervised.

Jack stayed outside the vault until Lily asked him to enter.

She noticed his surprise.

“You’re learning.”

“So are you.”

Inside the box were contracts.

One changed everything.

The Maragold Room itself was not owned by Victor Hail’s hospitality company.

It belonged to a dormant family trust.

Trustees:

Sarah Mitchell.

And Lily Bennett.

Lily laughed out loud.

“I own the restaurant where Victor threatened to fire me?”

Sarah almost smiled.

“Twenty percent.”

Jack read the document.

“Enough to demand financial records.”

That was the point.

Sarah’s father had intentionally added Lily years earlier.

Not because Lily was wealthy.

Because she was outside the criminal families.

Nobody noticed waitresses.

Nobody investigated broke single mothers.

Invisible people made excellent safeguards.

There was one more document.

Employee misconduct reports.

Victor Hail.

Harassment.

Wage theft.

Tip skimming.

Retaliation.

Lily stared.

“How long has this existed?”

“Three years,” the federal accountant said.

“Why wasn’t he fired?”

Because Marco had overridden every internal complaint.

Victor wasn’t merely cruel.

He was protected.

Bianca’s frightened behavior made sense.

Owen’s silence.

The cooks lowering their eyes.

Victor had taught everyone that complaining made things worse.

Lily’s anger became colder.

“What happens now?”

“If the trust documents are validated,” Sarah said, “you and I can appoint new management.”

Lily looked toward the ceiling.

The restaurant above them.

Victor’s kingdom.

Maybe not anymore.

Then Jack discovered a handwritten note inside the box.

Sarah’s father addressed it to her.

If Marco discovers the vault, he will try to invalidate the trust through the emergency clause.

The same clause.

The peace agreement was not just about docks.

It would have transferred temporary control over multiple connected properties.

Including Maragold.

Including the vault.

Jack’s murder would have given Marco legal cover to access the evidence.

Lily whispered:

“So I wasn’t only supposed to take the blame.”

Jack nodded.

“You were supposed to disappear into prison while Marco took the proof.”

Then Rocco’s phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“Jack.”

“What?”

“Victor just used his employee badge.”

“Where?”

Rocco looked toward the vault door.

“Upstairs.”

Lily’s blood ran cold.

The restaurant had supposedly been cleared.

May you like

Victor had returned.

And security footage showed he was carrying a gasoline can.
