Chapter 11 - THE FATHER WHO TRIED TO STEAL HER SON

The custody hearing was supposed to happen in six days.
Ethan wanted Noah.
For money.
For leverage.
For revenge.
Maybe all three.
Lily felt genuine fear for the first time since overhearing the murder plot.
Not fear of Marco.
Not Jack.
Not Victor.
A judge.
A courtroom.
A man in a suit making decisions about her child.
Those dangers had paperwork.
And paperwork had destroyed her before.
Jack sat across from her at Sarah’s temporary apartment.
“What do you need?”
Not “I’ll fix it.”
Not “Leave it to me.”
What do you need?
“A lawyer.”
“Done.”
She raised a finger.
“One I choose.”
Jack nodded.
“Of course.”
“And no intimidation.”
“Yes.”
“No calls to judges.”
His mouth tightened.
“That should not need saying.”
“It does in your world.”
“Fair.”
Lily selected a family-law attorney with no Moretti connections.
Jack’s investigators could provide evidence only through lawful channels.
Ethan’s payments from Marco.
The recording where he agreed to frame Lily.
His history of violence.
The hospital report Lily once lied on.
That last part terrified her.
“If I tell the truth now, they’ll ask why I lied then.”
Her attorney nodded.
“Yes.”
“And they may judge me.”
“Yes.”
Lily swallowed.
“But hiding it helps Ethan.”
“Yes.”
So Lily told the truth.
All of it.
The broken mirror.
The shove.
The stitches.
The scars.
The financial abuse.
The threats that she would lose Noah if she reported him.
Ruth gave a statement supporting Lily.
Against her own son.
“I should have done it years ago,” Ruth whispered.
“You helped me leave.”
“It wasn’t enough.”
“It was to me.”
Then something unexpected happened.
Bianca called.
She had seen Ethan meet Victor at the restaurant twice.
Owen saw him once.
The cook remembered Marco giving Victor an envelope with Lily’s name written on it.
People who had once lowered their heads started talking.
Cowardice ended the same way cruelty did.
One person first.
Then another.
Then another.
Lily realized she had never truly been alone.
Just surrounded by frightened people.
At the emergency hearing, Ethan appeared by video from federal custody.
His attorney argued Lily had endangered Noah by associating with the Moretti organization.
Lily’s attorney answered with a simple fact.
Lily had been an employee assigned to a private room without knowledge of the criminal conspiracy.
She was then targeted, framed, and cooperated with law enforcement.
The judge denied Ethan’s emergency custody request.
Lily nearly collapsed with relief.
But the judge ordered a full custody review.
Not finished.
Still.
A victory.
When she left court, Jack waited across the street.
Not on the courthouse steps.
He had deliberately kept distance.
Lily walked toward him.
“It’s denied.”
His shoulders relaxed.
“Good.”
Then he handed her a sealed envelope.
“What?”
“Marco’s apartment.”
Inside was a photograph.
Ethan.
Marco.
Victor.
And another person.
Lily’s father.
Her estranged father had told her for years she was too difficult to love.
Too heavy.
Too embarrassing.
Too much trouble.
May you like
He was sitting at Marco’s table.
And according to the date on the photograph, he had been working with them for nine years.
