Chapter 3 - THE MAN WHO VISITED HER CHILD

Marco had been inside Ruth’s building.
The hallway camera proved it.
4:16 p.m. the previous afternoon.
He entered wearing a navy coat.
Left eleven minutes later.
Ruth stared at the footage.
“I never opened the door for him.”
Rocco looked toward Noah.
“Did you?”
Noah shook his head.
“He didn’t come inside.”
“Then how did you see him?”
“He was by Mom’s bag.”
Lily frowned.
“My bag?”
Ruth snapped her fingers.
“You left it hanging outside the apartment.”
Lily remembered.
The strap had been wet from snow, so Ruth had hooked it over the hallway radiator.
Marco never needed to enter.
He only needed access to the bag.
The torn coat cuff.
The verification chip.
Someone had planted it on Lily so that if the sabotaged agreement was investigated, evidence would lead directly to the broke waitress nobody respected.
Marco’s words echoed.
No one listens to women who serve coffee.
He did not merely underestimate her.
He intended to bury her.
Rocco called Jack.
His expression remained flat as he delivered the information.
Then he listened.
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“Understood.”
He hung up.
“What did he say?” Lily asked.
“Mr. Moretti canceled the signing.”
Relief washed through her.
“And Marco?”
“Still upstairs.”
“He stayed?”
“Mr. Moretti asked him to.”
That sounded ominous.
Rocco looked at Noah.
“What other piece did the man give your mother?”
Noah stood and ran toward his toy box.
He returned with something Lily had never seen.
A small black plastic rectangle.
“What is that?”
Noah shrugged.
“It fell out of your bag.”
Rocco took one look and stopped.
“Don’t touch it.”
Lily’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
He called the security officer.
She sealed the device inside an evidence bag.
“What is it?”
Rocco’s expression had changed.
“A transmitter.”
“For what?”
“To broadcast data from the verification pen.”
Lily stared.
Marco’s plan had been more sophisticated than simply removing a chip.
The agreement would look valid.
The false verification record would transmit.
Jack would die.
Marco would inherit temporary dock control.
Rinaldi would be blamed.
And if anyone questioned the signing process?
The original chip would be discovered among Lily’s possessions.
A waitress with money problems.
A child.
An abusive ex.
Easy motive to invent.
Easy person to discredit.
Jack called directly.
Lily answered.
“Mr. Moretti.”
“Are you safe?”
The question surprised her.
“Yes.”
“Your son?”
“Yes.”
“Bring him and Mrs. Bennett’s caregiver to a secure hotel.”
“No.”
Silence.
Rocco stared at her.
Lily continued.
“You don’t get to relocate my child without explaining the danger.”
Jack answered immediately:
“You’re right.”
Again, unexpected.
“Marco Voss planted evidence on you. Someone working with him knows where your son sleeps. Until I know who, that location is compromised.”
Lily looked at Ruth.
Ruth nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
Jack continued:
“Rocco will arrange rooms. You choose whether you go.”
“I’m going.”
“Good.”
Then his voice lowered.
“And Lily?”
“Yes?”
“Do not come back to the restaurant tonight.”
She almost laughed.
“You think I’m going to sleep?”
“No.”
His tone changed.
“I think Marco knows you heard him.”
Her blood froze.
“How?”
“Because he just asked where you were.”
The line went quiet.

Then Jack added:
“And Victor Hail is gone.”
