Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO WASN'T DEAD

The lodge smelled like dust, pine, and old sins.

Adrian hated it immediately.

He had visited once as a boy.

His father had forbidden him from entering the basement.

Now he knew why.

The hidden room was behind a steel door beneath the wine cellar.

Luca cut the lock.

Inside, they found a woman.

Thin.

Silver-haired.

Alive.

Mara stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

The woman lifted her head.

Her eyes found Mara.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then she whispered:

“Baby?”

Mara collapsed beside her.

Adrian turned away.

Some moments did not belong to him.

Her mother’s name was Catherine Quinn.

She had been held for six weeks.

Victor had discovered her protected identity and taken her because he believed she knew where Jonah’s master files were stored.

She didn’t.

But she knew something else.

“Jonah wasn’t investigating Victor first,” Catherine said after a doctor treated her.

“He was investigating Dominic Vale.”

Adrian looked up.

“My father?”

Catherine nodded.

“Dominic had begun paying families.”

“What families?”

“Victims.”

Adrian frowned.

Catherine explained.

Late in life, Dominic Vale had attempted to quietly compensate people harmed by his criminal enterprises.

He kept detailed records.

Amounts.

Names.

Confessions.

Everything.

“He wanted out,” Catherine said.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Convenient timing.”

“I didn’t say he became a good man.”

That silenced him.

“He became a guilty one.”

Mara sat beside her mother.

“Where are those records?”

Catherine looked at Adrian.

“Dominic gave them to Jonah.”

Adrian went still.

“Jonah had my father’s confession?”

“Yes.”

“That’s why Sloane killed him.”

“Partly.”

“What else?”

Catherine looked uncomfortable.

“Jonah discovered who Adrian was planning to make his legal successor.”

Luca frowned.

“Me?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Catherine’s eyes moved to Mara.

The room went silent.

Mara laughed nervously.

“That makes no sense.”

Catherine took her daughter’s hand.

“Dominic knew Mara had helped Jonah organize the evidence.”

“I was twenty-three.”

“He trusted you because you had no loyalty to the Vale family.”

Adrian stared at Mara.

His father had created a private restitution trust worth nearly ninety million dollars.

If Adrian died or refused control, the independent trustee named in the sealed documents would oversee it.

That trustee was Mara Quinn.

Mara stood.

“No.”

Adrian understood her reaction.

“This is why Sloane kept searching for you.”

“He thinks I control the money.”

“You might.”

“I clean your house.”

“You also spent three years investigating me without being caught.”

“That is not reassuring.”

Despite everything, Adrian smiled.

Then Luca’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

When he ended the call, he looked at Adrian.

“Victor took Evelyn.”

Mara stared.

“From police custody?”

“During transport.”

“How?”

“Someone inside helped him.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Then Luca added:

“They found the transport driver dead.”

Mara’s mother closed her eyes.

“We’re running out of time.”

“Why?” Mara asked.

Catherine looked at Adrian.

“Because Victor doesn’t want the trust anymore.”

“What does he want?”

“To destroy Dominic’s confession.”

Adrian crossed his arms.

“And where is it?”

Catherine whispered:

“Inside the one place Victor believes Adrian will never search.”

Adrian already knew.

His father’s grave.
