Chapter 11 - THE BULLET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The bullet struck Adrian beneath the collarbone.

Mara saw the blood before she understood what had happened.

She screamed his name.

Luca shot the judge in the leg.

Security swarmed him.

Mara dropped beside Adrian.

“No.”

His eyes opened.

“Hey.”

“You are not allowed to say hey.”

He almost smiled.

“Bossy.”

Blood covered her hands.

“Stay with me.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Promise.”

His expression changed.

“Mara.”

“Promise.”

“I promise.”

The ambulance arrived in six minutes.

They felt like six years.

At the hospital, Mara sat in the waiting room wearing the bloodstained wedding dress Victor had forced her to wear.

Catherine sat beside her.

Evelyn was in police custody.

Victor was under guard.

None of it mattered.

Only the operating room doors.

After three hours, a surgeon approached.

“The bullet missed his heart.”

Mara began crying.

“He lost significant blood, but we repaired the damage.”

“He’ll live?”

“Yes.”

She covered her face.

Catherine held her.

Adrian woke the following morning.

Mara entered his room.

His first words were:

“That dress is terrible.”

She stared.

Then laughed and cried at the same time.

“You were shot.”

“I noticed.”

She sat beside him.

“You promised not to leave.”

“I’m difficult to kill.”

“So I’ve heard.”

His fingers found hers.

For several minutes, they simply stayed that way.

Then Adrian said:

“I want out.”

Mara frowned.

“Out of what?”

“Everything my father built.”

She stared.

“The businesses?”

“The illegal ones. The violent ones. Anything that requires people like Victor.”

“Adrian, you don’t have to change your entire life because you were shot.”

“I’m not.”

His eyes met hers.

“I’m changing it because I finally know what life I want.”

Mara’s heart beat faster.

“And what life is that?”

“One where missing breakfast is the most dangerous thing that happens in my house.”

She smiled through tears.

“I can work with that.”

He lifted her hand and kissed her fingers.

Then Noah entered carrying a folder.

“Sorry to interrupt the emotional breakthrough.”

Adrian glared.

“You enjoyed that sentence.”

“Very much.”

Noah placed the folder down.

“Federal investigators finished reviewing Dominic’s confession.”

Mara looked up.

“And?”

“They found evidence clearing Jonah Quinn of every accusation used against him.”

Her breath stopped.

For six years, officials had publicly described Jonah as a corrupt detective killed during a criminal dispute.

Now his name could be restored.

Mara started crying again.

But Noah wasn’t finished.

“There’s something else.”

He handed her a sealed envelope.

Jonah had written it before his death.

It was addressed to Mara.

She opened it carefully.

Little sister,

If anything happens to me, don’t spend your life avenging me.

Live.

Love someone.

Build something.

Laugh louder than the people who tried to silence us.

Mara pressed the letter against her chest.

Then she reached the final sentence.

And froze.

P.S. If Adrian Vale ever figures out you’re spying on him, tell him I’m sorry.

Mara looked at Adrian.

He stared back.

May you like

Noah began laughing.

And for the first time since Jonah died, Mara laughed too.
