Chapter 4 - THE HOUSEKEEPER WHO CAME TO DESTROY HIM

Adrian had trusted very few people in his life.

Mara had somehow become one of them without either of them discussing it.

Now she stood in his library telling him she had entered his home under false pretenses.

“You searched my office.”

“Yes.”

“My files.”

“Yes.”

“My private correspondence.”

“Yes.”

“For three years?”

“Only for the first six months.”

Adrian stared.

“Why stop?”

Mara looked away.

“Because the evidence didn’t match what I believed.”

“What evidence?”

“Your father’s records showed payments to Sloane. Yours showed the opposite.”

Adrian understood.

After Dominic Vale died, Adrian had spent years quietly eliminating his father’s most violent partnerships.

“You realized I wasn’t protecting Sloane.”

“Yes.”

“Yet you stayed.”

That was the question.

Mara’s eyes lifted.

“I needed the job.”

“Try again.”

Her throat moved.

“I felt safe here.”

The anger left Adrian faster than he wanted it to.

Mara continued.

“For the first time after witness protection, I had somewhere that felt predictable.”

“This house?”

“You have rules.”

“So does prison.”

“You know what I mean.”

He did.

His estate ran on schedules.

Boundaries.

Order.

For someone who had spent years hiding, predictability could feel like safety.

“And then?” he asked.

“Then I started liking the people.”

“Noah?”

“Yes.”

“Luca?”

“I didn’t know him.”

“Me?”

Silence.

Adrian took one step closer.

“Mara.”

“Yes.”

One word.

Enough.

Before either could say more, Luca entered holding a small evidence bag.

“We found this under Mara’s apartment sink.”

Inside was a flash drive.

Mara frowned.

“That isn’t mine.”

Adrian looked at Luca.

“Contents?”

“Encrypted.”

“Then decrypt it.”

“Working on it.”

Mara suddenly went pale.

“What?”

She pointed toward the drive.

“There’s a mark.”

A tiny scratched symbol.

A circle crossed by two lines.

“Jonah used that.”

Her voice trembled.

“He marked backup evidence so I’d recognize it.”

Adrian stared.

“Your brother put this in your apartment?”

“He died six years ago.”

“Maybe someone else did.”

Three hours later, Luca broke the encryption.

The drive contained audio recordings.

Bank records.

Photographs.

And one video.

Jonah Quinn appeared on screen.

He looked tired.

Afraid.

But alive.

“Mara, if you ever see this, I’m probably dead.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Jonah continued.

“Victor Sloane is not acting alone. Someone inside the Vale family is protecting him.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Jonah lifted a folder.

“I thought it was Dominic Vale.”

Mara looked toward Adrian.

“But I was wrong.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Jonah said:

“Dominic is protecting the real person because she’s his daughter.”

Adrian went completely still.

Mara whispered:

“You have a sister?”

Adrian stared at the frozen screen.

“No.”

Luca’s face drained.

May you like

Then he said:

“Maybe we do.”
