Chapter 9 - THE BLACK CROWN WAS A PERSON

Black Crown was not a protocol first.

It was a man.

My father had named the succession plan after the threat.

Julian found the oldest reference in a sealed legal file.

BLACK CROWN — INTERNAL DESIGNATION ONLY.

Identity unknown.

Suspected organizer of financial diversions, internal coercion, and compromised legal staff.

My father had spent years trying to identify him.

Samuel Vale had been one piece.

My mother’s death another.

Marco’s disappearance another.

But the strange part was Victor.

Every document suggested my father eventually trusted him.

Yet Victor had manipulated Vivien into marrying me.

Why?

We found the answer in Samuel Vale’s estate records.

He had left one encrypted archive.

Julian broke into it legally through the executor.

Inside were letters between Samuel and Victor.

Not conspiracy letters.

Warnings.

Victor had discovered Black Crown’s identity five years earlier.

He was trying to keep Noah hidden until I married because my father’s trust contained one bizarre safeguard.

Marriage triggered an independent trustee review.

Not because my father cared whether I had a wife.

Because marriage legally forced disclosure of spouse conflicts and continuity authority.

My wedding was a trap my father had designed years ago.

A trap for Black Crown.

Vivien had been pushed toward me so the trap would activate.

I stared at Victor’s final letter.

Dante must marry someone outside the inner circle or the review is useless.

Vivien is the only person Marco trusts enough.

So Victor and Marco had both used my wedding.

Against each other?

Or together?

Then Paolo rushed into the room.

“We found the source of the threat to Mara.”

“Where?”

“Internal network.”

“Which device?”

He hesitated.

“Emma’s tablet.”

Impossible.

Emma used it for cartoons.

We checked.

A remote-management profile had been installed months earlier.

Someone used the toddler’s device as a relay because nobody monitored it.

The administrator name:

BC_ADMIN.

Then the tablet camera activated by itself.

A live image appeared.

Dark room.

No face.

Only a hand placing Noah’s blue backpack on a table.

Then a distorted voice spoke.

“Cancel the wedding.”

The screen flickered.

“If Dante marries Vivien, the boy dies.”

Then a final image appeared.

Noah sitting in a chair.

Alive.

May you like

Unhurt.

And standing behind him was Uncle Victor.
