Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO GUARDED EVERY DOOR

Paolo did not run.
That was the terrifying part.
When I returned to Ravenwood, he was in the security room reviewing camera feeds as if nothing had changed.
I placed the ledger in front of him.
He looked at his own name.
Then laughed.
“Your mother always was dramatic.”
Dominic reached for his weapon.
I stopped him.
“No.”
Paolo looked at me.
“Still civilized.”
“Still listening.”
He leaned back.
For twenty-three years, Paolo had worked inside Ravenwood security.
Before that, his father had guarded my grandfather.
He knew every tunnel.
Every camera.
Every safe contractor.
Every weakness.
Samuel Vale handled documents.
Paolo handled access.
Together they could make people appear guilty, erase footage, reuse credentials, move records, and manufacture emergencies.
“Why?”
Paolo’s smile disappeared.
“Because your father destroyed mine.”
His father had been blamed for a warehouse theft in the 1990s.
Convicted.
Died in prison.
Paolo believed the Morettis framed him.
So he spent decades taking the family apart slowly.
Money first.
Trust second.
Succession last.
“My mother?”
He looked at me.
“She found Samuel.”
“Did you poison her?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Samuel.”
Dominic lunged.
Again I stopped him.
Paolo continued.
“He panicked. I told him not to.”
“And Marco’s boat?”
“Mine.”
The room went silent.
“You tried to kill my brother.”
“I believed I did.”
He almost admired Marco for surviving.
Then I asked about Noah.
Paolo’s expression shifted.
“I don’t hurt children.”
“You threatened him.”
“I threatened you.”
“Using a child.”
“Yes.”
That was enough.
Paolo reached toward the desk.
Dominic moved instantly.
But Paolo wasn’t reaching for a gun.
He pressed a switch.
Every screen in Ravenwood went black.
Then alarms began.
Fire doors locked.
The estate gates closed.
Paolo smiled.
“You wanted Black Crown.”
Red emergency lights came on.
“Now you have him.”
Then Emma’s voice came through the intercom.
Tiny.
Terrified.
“Mr. Dante?”
My blood turned cold.
Paolo’s smile vanished too.
He had not expected her voice.
“Emma?”
“I’m in the little book room.”
Behind her, I heard a man.
Orange-clove Samuel Vale.
Paolo whispered:
May you like
“He wasn’t supposed to be here.”
For the first time, Black Crown looked afraid.
